The name "Sugar Land" comes from its natural resources: sugarcane and oil palm trees. The first settlers in what is now Sugarland were German immigrants who named their land after their home town of Hanover, Germany - Illiessenhofen (now Illingworth). In 1836, General Sam Houston granted two square miles (0.8 km2) of land to James Kline for his farm known as Harden's Landing on Buffalo Bayou near present-day Sugar Land. With this grant, Houston demonstrated his commitment to creating a new capital for Texas by establishing a permanent seat for government within Texas' boundaries. By 1840, much of what would become Sugarland had been surveyed and platted – including what would become downtown – and it formally became a town on November 3 that year when Mayor John Ayer submitted an ordinance to Council proposing its incorporation under the name "Township No. 4". In 1845, following annexation by New Mexico from Mexico Territory, local officials renamed Sugar Land "Harrisburg", due to their growing wagon trade with that state through San Antonio de Bexar (then Mexican Territory). When New Mexico passed an act abolishing slavery in 1850s (see Proclamation 1065), all slaveholders in Mexican territory were required to move their slaves into Santa Fe or Presidio Coahuila before December 15th of that year; those found still living there were also subject to seizure by Ulysses S. Grant's army during the Mexican American War (1846-48). As a result of this proclamation and legislation from Congress – which also provided $5 million Dollars in financial assistance to impacted citizens – most Texans decided not to fight against independence from Mexico but rather remain within the Union as part of one nation under one flag. This choice set offa powerful emotional movement among Texans led by Governor Edmunds & Smith which eventually culminated with secessionist sentiments becoming dominant throughout much of southern TX after Lincoln's Emancipation Proclamation in 1863. On January 13th 1867 City Manager James Gorman submitted plans for a new courthouse complex adjacent to then-existing post office buildings on Main Street between Kirby Drive and Canova Boulevard; construction began on July 8th 1870 with completion two years later on October 25th 1872.“Origins Of The City Of Houston And Its Annexation To The Republic Of Texas” After New Mexico seceded from the Union in 1912 following passage of Proposition 12 social unrest erupted over universal suffrage requirements levied upon Hispanos living within US borders since national law prohibited such voting without prior consent from both nations' governments". He named his new community Brazoria after General Sam Houston's father-in-law and namesake on his home rancho de la Bahía Blanca north of San Antonio de Bexar Mission (now Humble). By 1870, Brazoria had over 100 residents and was being used as a cattle market for farmers east ofHouston. In 1915 Johnnie Cochran won an election as Mayor of Dallas against incumbent William Jennings Bryan with 54% of the vote; he would later become Ulysses S. Grant's Vice President during World War I A group led by Drayton Wintney built Winton House on Eagle Ford Boulevard just south of present day Interstate 453 in 1924 as an air force base for operations over IH10 between Dallas/Fort Worth airports and Beaumont/Port Arthur Railroad yards deep within Texarkana County - these days it serves as a visitor center operated by Texas Parks & Wildlife Department open daily 9am to 6pm from mid-March through November
