By 1850, sugar cane had become a popular crop in what is now Sugar Land, and development began around the railroad station on Buffalo Bayou. Today, Sugar Land is one of the most prosperous areas in Texas with more than fifty thousand residents and over two dozen businesses including several Fortune 500 companies. The history of SugarLAND starts with its founding by the Tejanos in 1836 when they settled along Buffalo Bayou east of Houston for economic reasons after fleeing Mexico’s war-torn country during the Alamo Rebellion (1835-36). The Tejanos were well known for their sugar cane growing operations throughout Texas and brought their expertise to this new land where they developed a successful business model based on market demand rather than traditional methods like irrigation or slave labor. The firstTejano school opened in 1840 in what is now Cypress Creek Elementary School; it later evolved into Sabinal High School which served students from Sabinal until 1965 when it merged with Brown Middle School to form Trinity Christian High School; Trinity has since been renamed University City High School after changes to its demographics withinHouston (UH). In addition to farming and commerce, early settlement helped establish social order through law enforcement as well as educational opportunities for local children who could not attend mainstream schools due to lack funding or space at local churches or other public institutions. Sugar Land is a town in Texas, and part of the Dallas-Fort Worth metropolitan area. It was founded on September 14, 1836 by General Sam Houston as a military outpost to control the region around Fort Worth. The name "Sugar Land" was derived from the sugarcane that grew there. The first post office in Sugar Land was established on May 10, 1837. The town began to grow rapidly after it became an important route for wagon trains carrying goods and people between Texas and Mexico. In 1849, Governor James Kenedy ordered that all nonwhite residents be driven out of Sugar Land and its environs because they were contributing to the city's growth.
