This ordinance remained in effect until 1971 when it was repealed by Mayor Harry Waddell due to opposition from local gunowners who felt that it infringed on their Second Amendment rights. The last public regulation related to firearms in Sugar Land took place on November 9, 1972 when Mayor Waddell proposed amending Penal Code § 5-2-11 (amending Municipal Firearms Regulations) which would have made it an unlawful act for any person not licensed under Penal Code § 5-2-11 to possessed a firearm within the city limits

In 1907 local merchants formed "Houston & Texas Western Railroad" to offer passenger service between Houston and Sugar Land via Galveston Island for $1 per mile (2 cents per kilometer). Passenger trains ran until 1951 when operations were transferred to Conroe Railway Company which operated them until 1971 when they were returned to Houston & Texas Western Railroad ownership; since then Sugarland has had its own Amtrak line In 1897 local banker C H White developed what became known as "White's Addition" which grew into one of downtown Sugar Land's most vibrant commercial districts; it still retains many historic buildings including two banks, five insurance companies, four retail stores including Sears Roebuck and Kress Hardware Co., four restaurants (including one with a restaurant chain), two movie theaters (including one once home to Elvis Presley), four radio stations - KHOU-1240 AM and KLIF-1310 AM - fifteen shopping malls (containing over 2,000 stores) and sixteen churches/synagogues In addition to its many businessesTexaco Refinery opened here in 1978 adjacent to Stemmons Freeway; it manufactured gasoline tanks, retail products such as candy bars, cigarettes and software
