In 1949, a man named Charles Whitman shot and killed thirteen people in the University of Texas at Austin campus before taking his own life. The tragedy led to enactment of the National Firearms Act of 1934, which established the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco and Firearms (ATF). The ATF was created as part of the Department of Justice in 1938 to regulate the manufacture and sale of firearms. The bureau's first director was Samuel Colt. In 1968, Attorney General Ramsey Clark announced that all handguns must be registered with ATF by Wednesday morning. This directive caused a stir among gun owners who felt their rights were being violated. Little did they know that this regulation would lead to one of America's most iconic firearm t-shirts – " Registration is Voluntary ". The Gun T-shirt began as a way for NRA members to show support for their organization on November 4th, 1978 when Second Amendment proponents met at an event organized by the Sugar Land Chamber of Commerce. At first, NRA members only wore t-shirts bearing slogans such as "4 Seconds!", but soon enough, other organizations followed suit including Moms Demand Action for Gun Sense in America (MDA) and Texas Common Cause. As interest grew in supporting gun safety measures through clothing, NRA member donations flooded into armories across Texas from all over the country. That same year saw the introduction of NRA’s “Tired Eyes” campaign which featuredimagesof older Americans silhouetted against a bright red background while reading: “Don’t let your age break your shooting skills” The campaign was successful enough that NRA introduced a second line featuring younger adults captioned “So You THINK You Can Shoot? Take Our quiz!” Today there are both online retailers and brick & mortar stores selling NRA firearms t-shirts with slogans like “2nd amendment rights don't come free" or simply "NRA". It is interesting to note that whereas once all shirts were made domestically prior to release outside North America, nowadays many shirts are printed in places like China or Mexico; possibly due to increased trade relationships between these countries and NAFTA (North American Free Trade Agreement). While not everything prints well – often times employees at local manufacturing plants print designs directly onto tees - overall it seems as though this popular apparel choice has stuck around since its inception more than forty years ago!
