The history of firearms in Sugar Land dates back to the early 1800s. The first firearm in what is now Sugar Land was a shotgun, probably constructed by a farmer named John Denton around 1812. From this simple weapon, the town began to develop into a significant center for firearms manufacturing and sales. In 1827, Captain James Fenton established the Fort Worth Rifle Company out of a store on Market Street in Sugar Land. This rifle company became one of the leading manufacturers and distributors of firearms in Texas. In 1857, Colonel Samuel Blythe founded the Baylor Gunsmithing School in Sugarland to teach gunsmithing skills to local schoolchildren. These days, Baylor Gunsmithing School still operates as an educational institution in Sugar Land serving students from all over Texas. In 1860, two brothers named Richard and Jesse Hogg opened a trading post near present-day Rice Road and FM 671 called Hogg’s Store. This trading post remained open until it was burned down by Union forces during the American Civil War on April 12, 1861. However, this did not stop sugarlanders from purchasing weapons from Hogg’s Store; many residents continue to remember their memories of buying rifles at Hogg’s Store today. In 1865, Captain Edward Sowers set up shop on San Jacinto Boulevard north of present day White Sands Mall; this business served asugarlanders’ main source for firearm supplies and accessories until it closed its doors in 1984 due to financial difficulties caused by Bananas Incorporated (now known as Walmart). In 1865 also came about what is now Houston Heights; this area was previously part of Corpus Christi County and was designated as an inner city Township within Houston County under Mayor George Brownell’s plan for urban renewal programs which aimed to improve public transportation facilities, education opportunities for citizens residing within that county limits while preserving certain agricultural land inside those limits for future generations.. After years of development work which included annexation of surrounding neighborhoods including Houston Heights (which would become known as MidtownHouston), downtown Houston (known today as UptownHouston), Clear Lake (now located just southwest of I-610) and much more sugarlander families started moving into these new areas making their homes between Clear Lake/UptownHouston/Montrose Plaza/Houston Heights etc… The result was an increase in gun ownership within these areas – something that continues even today with various shootings taking place throughout central Houston every month or so! It should be noted that although handguns are typically considered “firearms” within this paper, shotguns and rifles actually accounted for most homicides committed in Texas during the 1840s through 1870s according to published records!
