Sugar Land is located in Travis County on the Edwards Plateau, east of Austin and southeast of Dallas. The town was founded by James Kline in 1836 as an agricultural community on what is now known as Cotton Row Road near present day Sugar Land Mills Shopping Center. In 1839, Kline named his community after Arthur Ashe, then British Ambassador to the United States and future president of Ireland. The name "Sugar Land" was selected because sugar beets were being grown there at that time and by extension it symbolized refinement and progressiveness for the region. In 1840, John Gregg built a cotton gin in what is now downtown Sugar Land; this became one of America's first commercial cotton gin facilities. By 1850, over 100 small farmers had moved to Sugar Land from rural areas around Austin to increase their cotton production and become part of a growing economy based on agriculture that would later be centered around Houston

In 1845, a post office was established in Sugar Land and it remained operational until 1901. In 1861, two years after Texas seceded from Mexico, General Sam Houston ordered his commands to burn down all Mexican property within five miles of Houston in an attempt to break up the Mexican-controlled region. This event is considered one of history's most infamous「burns」and helped establish Texas as an independent country. In 1865, due to this action and other factors such as poverty and lack of education among its citizens, Sugar Land became a major center for cotton production during Reconstruction time. However, by 1870 only 10% of its population still lived in rural areas while 90% resided in downtown SugarLand where many businesses were founded during this time including The Rice Mill Company (1871), Jardine Rubber Company (1881),the United States Custom House (1892), First Baptist Church (1893), Stonington Tanks Ltd.(1901) and more today.
