In 1839 when Sam Houston became president pro tempore of the United States Senate he nominated James Polk (1812–1845) to succeed him as Vice President because Polk was then running for re-election as a Whig candidate against Andrew Jackson (1828–1861). Polk won but met with stiff opposition within his own party when he took office because he wanted to liberalize American banking laws which were causing economic difficulties at home and abroad; so much so that Clay Frick (1800–72), one of Jackson's key allies in Congress shifted allegiance to Polk without giving up his old support for Clay Frick's opponent Harrison Gray Otis (!—1863) while serving concurrently as Secretary at War under Polk's administration. When Jackson ran for reelection against Democratic incumbent Franklin D. Roosevelt in November 1932 he used aspects of sectionalism which were still alive among Americans along racial lines – especially among those who felt their southern states had not been treated fairly during Reconstruction – instead of focusing on issues like unemployment or income inequality which would have resonated better with white working class voters across all regions across America due to growing industrialization since World War I thanks largely to German investment following America's entry into World War I – something that FDR himself experienced firsthand through his political apprenticeship working on Wall Street during Prohibition era responsible for creating America’s largest corporation ever: General Motors! After successfully defeating Roosevelt by winning most vital swing states such as Michigan and Wisconsin while finishing second nationally behind Herbert Hoover (1915–34), Franklin D.
