Today,Stephenville remains one of America's most rural communities with access to few public amenities save for its library which is open to all locals who can bring their books inside from May through October during regular hours; however, there are no stores or restaurants within walking distance other than one convenience store that does not carry any food items larger than pastries or ice cream sandwiches

The Stephenville, Texas town of about 4,000 people was founded in 1836 by Captain John Fenton and his wife. The Fentons were the first white families to settle in what is now Stephenville. They built a log cabin on a hill near the present-day town center, and soon began trading with Indians and other settlers in the area. In 1838, Captain Fenton married Sarah Barnes and they started farming around the nearby village of Beardstown. In 1850, they moved their farm to what is now Stephenville proper. They continued to live there until 1870, when they sold the land and moved back east to Beardstown. During the 1840s and 1850s, Stephenville was an important stop on stagecoach routes between Nacogdoches (now Austin) and Fort Worth (now Dallas). It also served as a military outpost during the Mexican-American War because it was located close to several forts used by General Antonio López de Santa Anna’s army. In 1881, after many years of steady growth inStephenville thanks to its growing population of farmers, traders,and miners, local officials decided that it was time for a new schoolhouse. A committee chaired by John Waddell chose the design and construction of this building took two years from start to finish. The new school opened in September 1881 at a cost of $6000 dollars. At that time there were only 8 students in total attending school from Stephenville; however rapidly these numbers grew as more people came into town for trade or settlement purposes. The first teacher hired at StephenVILLE School was Mrs Pious Piper who taught 3rd through 5th grades before moving up to 6th grade where she remained until her retirement in 1951/52; Mrs Elizabeth Cook taught 1st through 3rd grades before she too retired after 36 years teaching at StephensVILLE High School). By 1860 Stevevilie had become one of Texas’ most thriving towns with over 10 churches,, 2 hotels,, & 20 stores all open 24 hrs., incorporated under Townepublication No #1 Dec 1861
Stephenville was founded in 1872 by Samuel H. Stephenson and James L. Buchanan. The town grew rapidly due to the railroad's arrival, and by the end of the century it had a population of over 1,000 people. In 1903, Stephenville became the county seat of Willacy County after being chosen by a vote from its residents.
