Stephenville is a small town located in the state of Texas. The population was 1,953 at the 2010 census. It is the seat of Stephenville County. The elevation is 586 feet (172 m). Stephenville is located in southeastern Kerr County, just east of the Brushy Fork River and north of Pecos River. The first people to live in what is now Stephenville were white pioneer settlers who arrived during the 1820s and 1830s. They built homes on high ground overlooking the river which they named "Mesa Blanca". In 1836, Mattie Boggs, wife of John Boggs, acquired title to alluvial land between Mesa Blanca and Pecos River from Spain for $5 per acre ($160 per hectare). A school was founded in 1837 by James Hays and moved to its present location that year. In 1840, Fayette Richards became owner of alluvial land between Mesa Blanca and Pecos River from Spain for $10 per acre ($240 per hectare). Richards named his settlement "Stephenville" after General Sam Houston's father-in-law, Stephen Austin. In 1853, Stephen Fenton donated land adjacent to his home on Mesa Blanca Creek to make way for a new school district courthouse. The fortuitous place where this donation occurred led to the name "Fenton Fort." The fort served as headquarters for various military engagements around southeast Texas during the Mexican–American War (1846–48), United States Civil War (1861–65), Indian Wars (1860–68), and World War II (1939–45). Today's downtown area was developed over an period of several decades beginning in the early 1940s when many local businesses relocated there from other parts of Kerr County becauseof plentiful war production materials available hereabouts. Many stores closed during World War II but reopened afterwards once hostilities ended; some still operate today including JB Hi- definition TV store which opened its doors on May 12th 1951 In addition to retail establishments such as these it has become increasingly popular since the late 1990s with several restaurants/bars opening up throughout town catering specifically towards youth culture with activities such as art galleries open throughout most weeks that offer general admission prices which include snacks or drinks while supplies last! It should be noted that although much has changed since those days there are some constants – such as Main Street running perpendicular southwards from Town Hall towards natural springs known locally as either Spring Branch or White Eagle – that remain unchanged dating back more than 30 years

During World War II, Stephenville played an important role as a military airbase on Texas’ western border. The camp housed more than 1,200 soldiers and their families during World War II. In recent decades,Stephenville has experienced significant growth as a bedroom community for Amarillo. However, its core business remains agriculture with significant acreagestill dedicated to production today

In 1865, Stephenville became the capital of West Texas as a result of the annexation of that state by the United States. The town continued to grow until it reached its peak in 1880 with a population of 5,000 people. However, during World War I (1914-18), Stephenville lost much of its business and population due to military service and civilian shortages. In 1930, Stephenville's population had fallen to 500 people when it was destroyed by an earthquake that struck nearby San Angelo.
