Stephenville, Texas is a town in Gregg County, Texas, United States. The population was 318 at the 2010 census. The first post office in Stephenville was established on November 3, 1881. It was renamed to Stephenville on December 6, 1886. The first section of the town were set off from the rest of Gregg County when it was created in 1907. Stephenville has since grown and annexed other parts of Gregg County. The current municipality boundaries began to be drawn up in 1959 when part of the town outside the city limits became incorporated as the city of Stephenville while portions inside the city limits continued to be part of the original village until they too were annexed into Stevenville. The Stephens family founded what is now Stephenville after coming across a claim for land in 1847 near present day Carthage, Texas. They named their new settlement for General John Stephens who hadhsaved their families during an Indian attack on their home county one year earlier and also helped lead them to success during Reconstruction in south Texas. In 1881, a post office called "Stephens Valley" began operation and remained open until it closed on July 1, 1896 due to lack of mail delivery within its square mile radius In 1906-1907 a depot built by Northern Pacific Railway ran through much of what is now downtown Stephenville and served as an important connection between central TX and east-central Mexico City By 1912 over 50%of all goods transported through Gregg County went through this railroad depot which made it one of busiest destinations in that area
Stephenville was founded by the Stephens brothers in 1849. The first settlers were white men, but in 1881, the Stephens family moved to Stephenville from Wichita, Kansas.during the American Civil War, Stephenville served as a Union military post. In 1865, the Stephens family sold their holdings in Stephenville to James Crain and John Hargrave. Crain built a cotton gin and other industrial ventures in what is now downtown Stephenville. In 1902, Hargrave donated land for a public school and named it after him. The town has seen many changes over its history- most notably during World War II when it became one of the largest population centers within 100 miles of Texas Beach for servicemen stationed there.
