Stephenville, Texas is a small town in Stephenville County, Texas, United States. The population was 3,719 as of the 2010 census. It is part of the Austin-Round Rock-San Antonio metropolitan area. The first settler in Stephenville was John Hogg and his family who arrived in 1836. Hogg's brother Amos set up a farm on what is now Main Street near the present day high school. In 1839, James Buchanan bought land from Amos and established Buchanan Ranch which included today's north side of Stephenville Elementary School. One of Buchanan's sons built a house on what is now Callahan Road which served as the town’s first Courthouse and Jail. In 1881, J.W. Stephens purchased 2,000 acres (100 ha) east of town from Wm Baughman for $15 per acre ($2/ha). Stephens built several houses here including the historic First Baptist Church which still stands today (dedicated in 1917). Stephens also operated a successful feed business here before he died in 1888 at age 72 years old leaving his ranch to his son Clementson Stephens who continued to run it until it sold to Danforth Cooley in 1966. A post office called Stephenville was established in1892 and remained operational until 1934; however, no mail reached the community during that time period because the only route through Stephenville was via San Marcos! The original Postmaster General for Stephenville was Mrs Fannie Dickson and her husband Phebe Dickson (1872-1950), both natives of Scotland who came over with their families when they were just eighteen months old. When Mrs Dickson passed away suddenly at age seventy one she bequeathed her home “Church Hill” to local citizens with instructions that it should serve as a public square for all purposes - an idea carried out by Mayor Dickie Barnes after she retired from office following eight terms!

Stephenville is a small town in Gregg County, Texas, United States. The population was 814 at the 2010 census. Stephenville is part of the Stephenville–Bryan Micropolitan Statistical Area. The post office has been in operation since 1881. The first significant settlement in what is now Gregg County was made by the Austin and San Antonio Railroad on July 17, 1876 near present day Stephenville. A store and hotel were built here and named the Depot Inn after depot agent James S. Dawson who directed construction of the railroad through Gregg County. The site of present day Stephenville was chosen for its strategic location as it lay between two major railway lines and surrounded by rolling hills that would provide shelter from cavalry raids or other potential Indian attacks during the early years of Texas independence. As a result, Stephenville grew rapidly during this time with residents buying land all around the town to establish farms and businesses that would survive until today. In 1907, when Wichita Falls was founded south of Stephenville on an adjacent ranchland, some residents decided to move to Wichita Falls because they found it more comfortable than living in one small town for so many years. This resulted in the founding of another small town nearby which became known as Wichita Falls suburbia (later known as Round Rock). At times there were up to twelve towns within a radius of about fifty miles of each other serving similar purposes but no longer exist today due to various factors including changing demographics, economic development or annexation by larger cities over time
Stephenville was founded in 1853 by Methodist missionaries. The town quickly became a thriving center for cotton and cattle farming, and during the 1930s it served as the base of operations for the Texas Rangers. Today Stephenville is an agricultural community with a population of around 1,000.
