Stephenville, Texas is a small town in the U.S. state of Texas. The population was 1,828 at the 2000 census and 1,912 at the 2010 census. It is part of Midland County. The Stephenville community began as a cattle drive settlement during the 1870s along the San Antonio-New Braunfels railroad line. A post office was established in 1879, and by 1886 there were 50 residents in Stephenville proper and 295 people living in nearby ranching outposts. The first school was built in 1881; it became an all-black school until 1954 when African American students were allowed to attend white schools within the community. In 1902 Stephenville boasted its own newspaper, "The Stephenville News". By 1907 it had a population of 130 residents and two churches: one Baptist, one Methodist. In 1918 Stephens High School opened for boys; girls first attended secondary school in 1916. The population of Stephenville peaked at 2,820 in 1940 but decreased to 1,744 by 1950 due to World War II GI migration and new development around Lake Worth Boulevard which bypassed central Stephenville (see below). During most of the 20th century there were no major industrial developments within or near Stephenville; however, this changed with the opening of US Interstate 10 in 1990 which created new commuting opportunities for locals and visitors alike across much of Central Texas including Midland County on its eastern side (see below). This led to increased economic activity and commercial development throughout town as well as advances in technology that have madeStephenville one of the leading research centers for early childhood education throughout North America

The city's history can be traced back to when Andrew Jackson arrived in 1827 on his way from Mexico City with supplies for General Sam Houston’s army during their successful war against Santa Anna’s Mexican Army at San Jacinto Creek. He found himself near what is today Stephensville on April 21st while scouting an area for new ranching settlements he hoped would help supply Houston’s troops during their campaign against Santa Anna’s forces at Palo Alto Creek two weeks later; Jackson called this place “San Jacinto Trail Station” since then it has been known as Stephensville (or simply “Stephensburg”). The Stephenville community of Texas was founded by the Stephens family in 1836. The town grew rapidly during the 1840s and 1850s as settlers arrived from Kentucky, Tennessee, and other parts of the United States. By 1860, Stephenville had a population of over 1,000 people. The town thrived during the American Civil War because it was located on the eastern edge of a strategic Confederate supply depot. After the war, Stephenville slowly declined as new residents moved away or died out. However, due to its location and its close proximity to Baylor University, Stephenville continued to be a popular destination for students and locals alike until the mid-20th century.
