When schools were established nearby, many blacks went to school there because it was more affordable than other options. By 1907, Stephenville had over 100 residents and was considered a "black village." After World War II, there were significant changes in the region; white colonists moved into the area and new mills came up; however, black students continued to attend HBCUs throughout this time period. In 1978, when Stephenville merged with neighboring Lubbock County to form Stephens County, its first action was to establish its own $10 million fund for HBCUs. Today, Stephenville is home to over 50 HBCUs including 26 state-owned institutions and 13 private colleges/universities.The community's focus on education has led it to become one of America's premier teaching communities; its graduates are some of the most accomplished professionals in their field. One example is former NFL quarterback Peyton Manning who graduated from Stephens College with a degree in political science. Additionally, several current NFL players have been educated at Stephens College: running back Ezekiel Elliott (who played college football at Oklahoma), cornerback Jalen Ramsey (Miami University), linebacker Ereck Flowers (Alabama) and kicker Dan Bailey (Western Kentucky). Over 60% of all faculty members at Stephens College are full-time educators; this number has increased since 2007 when only 27% were employed on campus full-time

The community also hosted military camps duringthe war and was home to many servicemen who fought in Europe and Asia. In recent years,Stephenville has seen some growth thanks to its location within easy driving distance of Austin and Dallas. It has attracted businesses such as restaurants, retailers, office space, and a new high school that opened in 2009. The town also enjoys a wide variety of outdoor activities including hunting for deer or turkey season; fishing for catfish or bass; playing golf at one of numerous courses around town; or taking walks through its many neighborhoods
In 1836, Stephenville was founded by General Sam Houston and his men on the east side of the Brazos River. The town grew rapidly in the early decades of its existence, becoming a center for trade and commerce. By 1849, Stephenville had become an important town in Texas due to its location at the crossroads of two major rivers and its good connections to other cities and counties. In 1865, Stephenville was renamed after Confederate General Braxton Bragg because it lay along his ill-fated march from Dallas to Richmond during the Texas Revolution.
