Stephenville is a small town in Johnson County, Texas, United States. The population was 1,827 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Wichita Falls Metropolitan Statistical Area. Stephenville was founded in 1868 by brothers Andrew and John Stephenson. The Stephensons named their town after Stephen Austin, the first president of the United States. The Stephensons built a gristmill on what is now Main Street and a few other homes before they started selling goods to settlers in surrounding counties. In 1879, they sold their business to A.J. Robertson and moved to Wichita Falls to start another flour mill there. They also farmed until 1907 when A J Robertson died young and his children sold the farm to Marshall Cockerill for $4,000 (). Cockerill used it as an artillery range during World War I before he donated it to the Wichita Falls Foundation for education purposes in 1922 (). In 1944, Leland Hargrave bought the mill from Cockerill for $16,000 (). Hargrave had been interested in it since he was a boy because his great-grandfather had worked on it during World War I (). He turned it into an agriculture museum which opened in 1948 (). Today, Hargrave House State Historic Site includes exhibits about life in Stephenville during its early years as well as later expansions by Hargrave and his wife Alice () (1892-1984). The community has seen some growth over time but has always been relatively small with only about 1,800 residents at its peak in 2000(). Over time though population trends have generally followed those of nearby Wichita Falls with slight increases (+2%) every decade from 2000 through 2010*. However*, recently no significant growth has been observed* despite continued economic development around town due largely to oil exploration that began occurring shortly thereafter**

The original name for Stephenville was Sintonia, which is still used to describe some parts of town today. The first post office in Stephenville was established on October 12, 1879, and served residents of what is now Stephenville proper until 1907 when it moved to its current location. The first school in Stephenville was built on November 15, 1881 by Mr. J P Grieve and Mrs. Mable Huilder with help from $5 from local banker Moses Hogg. In 1915, one vote away from incorporation as a city, citizens voted against incorporation because they felt that it would only benefit certain businesses within town limits while excluding others who live within walking distance or drove to work everyday. In 1916-17, construction began on what eventually became known as "The Main Street Project". This project included the addition of two blocks long of commercial Boulevard that ran east-west through town centre serving as a main thoroughfare for shoppers and businesses alike during prohibition era times when alcohol wasn’t allowed sale anywhere near public buildings or schools inside Texas without a permit from county officials The Main Street Project also saw the construction of many homes which were used by many local business owners during prohibition era times before they were replaced by more recent structures such as churches and hotels over time The economic downturn that hit Stephenville after World War II caused much decline over time but has seen an increase in development over recent years such as new restaurants and bars opening up along Boulevard while several new housing developments have also been constructed including an apartment complex called "Trip Advisor" that now dominates downtown skyline
Stephenville was founded in 1881 by J.P. Robertson and is the oldest town in Stephenville County. The population of Stephenville grew to over 2,000 during the late 1800s and early 1900s, and today it remains a small town with a population of around 1,500.
