In Stephenville, Texas, bullets have been a part of the town's history for over 100 years. Bullet holes can be seen in the buildings and walls of the old downtown core and many of the businesses still use bullet-riddled signs to advertise their services. The first Bullets store opened in 1892 in what is now the Courthouse Square. The store was run by John Witherspoon and his son, John Frawley Witherspoon. The store was an early touchstone for ammunition sales in Stephenville. In 1913, Bullets moved to its current location on First Street near US 183. In 1951, Bullets merged with Armoury Ammunition Company to form Armoury Ammo & Gun Store Inc., which remained operational until 1978 when it closed its doors permanently due to financial troubles. Bullets has since returned to business as a small shop located at 5th and Main Streets in Stephenville. Stephenville is a small town in east Texas, located on the banks of the Trinity River. The population was 1,848 at the 2010 census. Stephenville is part of the Tyler–Burns County, TX Metropolitan Statistical Area. The first European to sight what is now Stephenville was Captain John Smith in 1743 when he was exploring the area for a Spanish colony. At that time there were no permanent settlements in what is now Tyler and Burness Counties and Smith's exploration may have been accidental as he could not find any water sources or enemy activity to explain the lack of discovery. The first known settlers in what is now Tyler County were James Robertson, who arrived about 1824 from Missouri; and his brother-in-law William Hogg, who arrived about 1826 from Tennessee. In 1830 Stephenville was platted by James Robertson with land that included present day downtown Stephenville and all of today's Burnet County. A post office called Stephens Station was established at this site in 1836 but it never received mail because there wasn't enough traffic to warrant an official post office name until 1850 when it was renamed Stephenson Station after JB Stephenson, one of Robertsons investors. In 1860 Abraham Lincoln came throughTyler on his way to Kansas City where he would become president six years later. When he reached Stephens Station, he stopped for lunch and ordered two sandwiches which would later be immortalized when President Lincoln offered one sandwich to every man on his train traveling westward across America during his Gettysburg Address! During World War II many local men volunteered their services and worked on various projects throughout Texas including manufacturing munitions plants at nearby Beaumont/Port Arthur and Midland/Edmonton factories while also serving in the military or guarding important areas such as Fort Worth Airport during Japanese air raids. After the war many residents moved away but some remain here today including former Mayor Lamar Boren (D) who currently resides in downtown Stephenville with wife Lori Laughlin (R). As markets grew more competitive both internationally and nationally jobs became available for people with good skills within reasonable distances both inside Texas and out via Interstate 20 leading to increased growth opportunities for businesses like Home Depot which has since become an integral part of society hereabouts throughout much of East Texas – something we take for granted but once upon a time required hard work and dedication over 10 acres! nickname given by then business manager Vernon Giddings after seeing Home Depot open its doors just outside town limits!
