In 1922, he donated 2 acres (0.8 km2) of his property to be used as a school gymnasium which was called Davenport High School or simply "Davenport". It served as a high school until it closed its doors in 1973 due to budget cuts by then-Governor Richard Moseley%. In 1978, local businessmen Lamar Hinson and Donnie McClendon bought Davenport High School and reopened it as Southside High School which remains open today as one of Texas' leading high schools. The town's early days were difficult because there was no water available aside from wells dug by localsman with hand pumps. However, through hard work and ingenuity residents developed an efficient water system that still uses solar energy today Today, Stephenville is home to many businesses including KFC , ExxonMobilMobil , Liberty Mutual Insurance Company - one of the larger employers - Arvest Bank - another large employer - Tyson Foods - Oklahoma City's second-largest employer - FedEx Ground - one of Asia's most significant air cargo operators - several restaurants including Ruby Tuesday & Wendy's ; and numerous small businesses providing services such as plumbing advice/repair/maintenance/shoplifting prevention
