Stephenville was founded in 1857 by John and Elizabeth Stephenson. The town grew quickly, and by 1870 it had a population of 1,500. In 1907, Stephenville became the county seat of Limestone County. The town continued to grow as a cotton-growing center until World War II when it lost its status as a major city.
