Stafford, Texas is a small town in McAllen County, Texas, United States. The population was 5,531 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Houston–The Woodlands–Sugar Land metropolitan area. Stafford was founded in 1881 and incorporated as a town on March 14,1882. The name "Stafford" comes from the old English word "staff," which means staff or stick. In 1928, Stafford became an annex of Galveston and then annexed toHouston in 1972. Today it is one of the fastest-growing cities in McAllen County with over 4,000 residents since 2000 The city of Stafford has two Main Street Streets: Main Street South and Main Street North. There are also two streets that ran parallel to each other for about a half mile: Old US Highway 90 (signed TX-90) and Old US Highway 637 (signed TX-637). On main street north there are two stores - A&W Root Beer and Joes Pizza - before turning into residential areas starting just east of I-10 near Loop 610 West/I-636 southbound and continuing east until you reach I-610/Loop 610 East which becomes Addison Road before terminating at FM 620 southbound. According to the 2010 census, there were 5,531 people living in Stafford who identified themselves as being Anglo American Indian or Hispanic American Indian origin; 1% Asian; 2% Black or African American; 3% Native Hawaiian or Other Pacific Islander; 11% White alone; 5% Two or more races; 10% some other race

Stafford was founded in 1849 by a group of men from Texas. The town was named after General Andrew Jackson Stafford, who fought in the Mexican-American War and also served as President of Mexico. The first store in Stafford was built on the railroad tracks and opened in 1850. The town grew rapidly and by 1871 it had a population of over 1,500 people. In 1901, the city became one of the fifty-six towns consolidated into Austin, Texas. In 1919, Stafford merged with neighboring Paris to form the new city of Paris Township. In 1930, the township was dissolved and its residents were absorbed into Austin. Today, most of what is now Stafford is within Travis Countyoke School District #1 which has a population of over 17,000 students!
In the early 1800s, Stafford was a small community located on the banks of the Trinity River. The town was named after General George Stafford, who served in the Mexican-American War and then became a U.S. Senator from Texas. After his death in 1852, the town was renamed to San Antonio de Padua and then to Austin in 1857. In 1873, Austin became the capital of Texas and Stafford was relocated to that city.
