Stafford, Texas is a small town in Webb County, Texas, United States. The population was 1,581 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Austin-Round Rock metropolitan area. Stafford was founded in 1884 by John Stafford and his wife Anna Briggs Stafford. The first post office in Stafford was established on October 15, 1885, and was named after John Stafford's father-in-law, James A. Armstrong (1821–1901). The first store in the town opened on December 12 of that year. In 1895 Major Edwin Ladd purchased land east of town from John Hogg for $2 per acre. Stuart Wogan Store became the first general store in central Stafford when it opened on November 14th, 1896. The first post office closed on September 28th 1906 due to budget cuts by then Postmaster General Orville Freeman Jr.. However mail continued to be delivered through local carriers until 1911 when the last bushel of corn arrived from Wichita Falls and therefore no longer needed to be transported via wagon or horseback to Stafford; all mail now came by truck or train. In 1907 George Fenton acquired 2 acres west of town for $10 per acre which he used as a farmstead until his death in 1935. In 1945 two Japanese Americans were arrested and held incommunicado while waiting for deportation orders they had received while living in Jersey City, New Jersey; their families were notified but refused to come forward lest they are interned with them also like their relatives did at Oso Valley Prison near Yuma Arizona during World War II On July 10th 1951 Dr Charles Cawley set up a medical clinic at 6100 Preston Road which would become one of the largest outpatient clinics ever operated by an American hospital outside of Europe or Japan On November 3rd 1967 Dr Charles Cawley died after long illness at age 90 years old

The town grew rapidly due to its location on the banks of the Brazos River and its connection to the railroad. By 1907, Stafford had a population of over 1,000 people and became an important industrial center for Texas. In 1930, the town was renamed Stafford after James F. Stafford's grandson, James F. "Jimmy" Stafford Jr., who served as governor of Texas from 1931 to 1933 and as U.S. senator from 1936 to 1939.
