A post office called Stafford was established in 1871, and remained in operation until it was discontinued in 1907. The town site became an agricultural center with production of cotton and other crops until World War II when industry took over as the mainstay of local economy although agriculture continues to be a major component today with some 1 million square feet (93 thousand m2) devoted to storage capacity for cotton produce alone
