Stafford is a town in Vernon County, Texas, United States. The population was 1,711 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Tyler–Marshall Metropolitan Statistical Area. The first settlers in Stafford were originally from Elizabethtown, Kentucky. They came to this area in 1851 and started a small farm. The first post office was established in 1853 and the first store was built in 1865. In 1868, Stafford had its first school and First Baptist Church was built that year. In 1907, two schools were established: one for girls and one for boys. A dairy was founded in 1914 and a smelter began operations in 1922; both became defunct by 2002. In 1929, Stafford opened its own jail which later became known as Mexico Correctional Center after Mexican President Agustín Castilla visited the town during his campaign for governor of Texas . The jail closed down on July 1st of 2003 due to budget cuts made by then Govt Rick Perry but reopened on October 9th of that year as an annex to Richland County Jail located just east of Corinth . Stafford, Texas is a town in McLennan County, Texas, United States. The population was 1,838 at the 2010 census. It is the county seat of McLennan County. The name "Stafford" comes from pioneer John Stafford and his family's rancho situated on the east edge of what is now Stafford. The first European to visit what became Stafford was Juan de la Cruz on October 26, 1536. He named it San Pedro de las Animas after one of his trading posts in New Mexico Territory that he had explored earlier that year. A post office called Fort Worth was established in 1875, but it was discontinued in 1876 because there were no settlers at the fort and no mail service. In 1907, a group of farmers founded the City of Stafford as an unincorporated community near their cotton plantations east of present-day Westville Road. The city charter was approved on November 28, 1907; however, its incorporation did not take place until 1912 when construction started on the city hall and other municipal buildings which would become hallmark features of the town for many years to come. The original white residents were largely men who worked on orchards or cotton fields outside of town limits; however over time more women began to move into town and start their own families as well as work in local stores and businesses. In 1916 white residents voted to change their name from "City of Fort Worth" to "Stafford." This decision by the white majority reflected growing tension between whites and African Americans over race relations which had been escalating since Reconstruction ended two years earlier following General Joe Johnston's military defeat at Appomattox Court House. In 1932 unincorporated parts (northwest corner) of McLennan County were annexed by Stafford while also annexing portions (southwest corner)of Williamson County due to population growth thereabouts during that decade related to oil industry development along I-35W between Houston and Dallas/Fort Worth Airport). By 1938 all unincorporated parts within McLennan Counties except for those located within present day Westville Road had been annexed by Stafford save for small areas northwest of town off FM 8062 along US 79 which remained part Williamson County until 1974 when they too were annexed by Stafford along with most areas south OF FM 8062 including much rural land now inside incorporatedMcLennanCounty boundaries

By 1945, however, Stafford had rebounded slightly and had a population of around 2,500. Today, it is an agricultural town with a small commercial district located on Main Street.
