After Ft Griffin closed down in 1870 due to budgetary problems, local farmers began building new homes around what is now downtown Stafford The first store opened locally in 1886 by Silliman & Company which still stands today along Main Street across from current day Bradley High School (then known as Rusk Intermediate). By 1907 there were six stores operating within one block of Central Square including Brown’s Clothing Store (now Olde Hickory Furniture), Post Office (later renamed First Texaco), Lumber House (now Current Home Hardware), Boot Shop (now Jussie’s Barbecue) and Gourd Patch restaurant/bar which would open its doors on Forest Service Road just west of present day US 59 between Cedar Springs Drive and rural Farmington Hills Drive today. When World War I came around Hubbard Broadcasting System established studios here with Waco A&M University teaching students production techniques This also brought out some heavy industry like Marshall Plan munitions plants which produced rubber kites for use by American troops during World War II before moving away once again In 1948 locals organized themselves into an agricultural society named “The Agricultural Society of Stafford” after selling their crops directly to merchants rather than through market demand or private companies A decade later the first high school was erected on South Main Street opposite current day Bradley High School with classes starting back up September 6th 1949 One other noteworthy event that occurred during this time period happened when Dwight Eisenhower became President after winning the 1952 election On November 15th 1955 approximately 12 businesses along Main Street went out into open rebellion against Mayor Johnnie Dunn over plans for road construction that had been put forth without input from any party members or citizens . As result three businesses were burned down including Dunn’s office buildings while property damage ran into the thousands In 1957 both schools were moved two blocks east onto Third Street where they remain today
