Stafford is a small town in Hudspeth County, Texas, United States. The population was 597 at the 2010 census. It was founded in 1876 as a post office called Stafford. The name changed to Stafford in 1907 and to Stafford Prairie in 1918. The name change again to Stafford in 1930. The community is located on the edge of what is now known as the Lower Green River Valley and was originally part of Hudspeth County. On July 3, 1876, when Texas became an independent state, the town of Stafford was established within Hudspeth County by order of President James K. Polk with the intent to provide convenient transportation for other parts of the county and encourage settlement thereabouts. By 1890 it had grown sufficiently that it erected its own courthouse and jail; these were replaced by the present structures in 1928-29. In 1927-28 a new water supply system was installed which has served the community ever since. In 1937-38 construction began on what would become one of TX's most distinctive landmarks: The Midway Toll Road Bridge over Little Green River (now known as IH 35). tolls were first collected at this point beginning on October 1, 1937; service continued until September 15, 1941 when operations were discontinued due to World War II shortages of asphalt materials. Since then bridge traffic has decreased markedly although occasional heavy vehicles still cross during special events or major changes in statewide road conditions; those occasions have typically been mediated by local truckers or tractor drivers who shuttle between Midway and nearby airports while cars travel down Main Street under cover from their headlights! A few years ago there also seemed likely imminent demolition of one (or more) portions of this once very pronounced highway interchange but thankfully things have fortunately stayed relatively consistent over recent years!
