Stafford, Texas is a town located in Hudspeth County, Texas, United States. The population was 2,521 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Austin-Round Rock metropolitan area. The first people to live in what is now Stafford were white Texans who settled there in the 1840s. They were driven out by Native Americans and replaced by Mexicans who came through the area during the Mexican American War. In 1846, Stafford was named for General Sam Houston after he defeated Mexico at San Jacinto. The town grew quickly because of its location on an important military road connecting Austin and Dallas. By 1860, Stafford had a school and two churches. By 1870, it had 12 businesses and over 100 residents. At that time, Stafford was one of the fastest growing towns in Texas due to its location and economic prosperity. In 1873, local merchants formed a company to develop land north of the town limits for a railroad depot and other purposes. This new development became known as North Central Railroad Company Station (later North Central Depot). In 1875, North Central Railway Company built a line from Fort Worth to Stafford which made it easier for people living in north central TX to get goods from east TX or Dallas (the original eastern terminus of the railroads). When this line opened, there were only six citizens living in Stafford; today it has over 1,000 inhabitants! After years of growth and progressivism during World War II – including construction of roads into Nowhere – Stafford began to decline during the postwar period until residential values increased again starting in the late 1990s when oil production decreased significantly neartownsend Lake Texoma
