Stafford is a city in Johnson County, Texas, United States. The population was 3,914 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Dallas-Fort Worth metropolitan area. The name Stafford was given to the town by General John C. Fremont in 1836 during the Texas Revolution as a gesture of thanks for military support that had been given to him and his brother Major James Stafford during their successful attack on San Antonio de Bexar (now downtown San Antonio). The town site was located on an area now occupied by the University of Texas at Austin campus. In 1876, Stafford was chosen as one of two towns in Johnson County to be built around a new courthouse which would be used as county seat for all Johnson County residents. The cornerstone for the first courthouse were laid on July 4th, 1876 by Judge Augustus Chapman and Mayor George Patton with Reverend Prentice Dowling officiating. The townspeople voted to rename themselves Stafford after General John Custer when he became known as an hero following his victory over Mexican forces at Palo Alto in 1846. However, General Ulysses S. Grant intervened and renamed the town Fort Worth instead because he deemed it more appropriate than Stafford - considered then still a backwoods outpost with low population density - due to its strategic location between Fort Worth and Arlington Heights, Illinois; today's Arlington Heights neighborhood lies just east of Fort Worth proper and south of Interstate 30 within neighboring Richardson County On October 1st 1870, Orrington Oil Company opened up oil production from what is now known as Main Street near present day White Sands Drive in what is now downtown Stafford In 1917, local businessman Harry Witherspoon started marketing Lifebuoy cigarettes out of his home on Main Street which continued until 2001 when it closed down . In 1924 real estate developer Averill Harriman bought 6 acres along Main Street from Humble Oil Co., east of White Sands Drive for $2 million dollars On November 5th 1926 JB Simons opened up his famous JBS restaurant & Lounge across from Wilson’s Chapel Baptist Church (later replaced with Target) which continues operation today even though it has been vacant since September 8th 1989 In 1928 Lyndon B Johnson served dinner there while traveling through Central America before becoming US President that year .... On January 26th 1929 Patsy Cline recorded her song “Hello Stranger” while performing at Wilson’s Chapel Baptist Church
