Stafford, Texas is a small town located in the Hill County seat of Terrell. The population was 1,811 at the 2010 census. It is the smallest incorporated community in Hill County. Stafford lies on the southern border of Terrell and is bordered by FM 1960 to its east and FM 527 to its west. The first settlers in Stafford were farmers who came from Kentucky during the early 1800s. By 1871, Stafford had a post office and two churches. In 1906, a school was built for children in Stafford and it served until 1955 when it was closed due to lack of funding. A new school was built in 1959 which still serve students today. The first store opened in Stafford in 1886 and operated until 1957. The first grocery store opened in 1907 and it continued to operate until 1978 when it closed due to loss of customers. The last store closed down because of competition from other stores nearby which made it difficult for customers to get what they needed without having to go out of town. In 1917, an oil well was drilled on land that now makes up part of Stafford's center square (now known as North Main Street). This well led to the development of oil production for local people beginning around 1920-1925 . For many years, oil production helped support the economy of Stafford but began declining starting around 1970s due mainly to technological advances which made drilling easier and cheaper than ever before making petroleum production more accessible outside Western Europe where fracking became popularized thanks largely to horizontal drilling techniques which are less environmentally harmful than traditional methods like vertical drilling.) However, recent investment has started restarting production meaning that there may be some hope that this trend will continue over time as there have been no major challenges encountered with this technology since its inception)

A post office was organized here on April 14, 1868, and named Stafford after General Isaac Stafford, an American Revolutionary War general and hero of the Battle of San Jacinto. The first store in town was built by Hiram Brownell. In 1907 it became the first incorporated municipality in Hudspeth County. The climate in Stafford is warm year-round with an average temperature of 37 degrees Fahrenheit (2 degrees Celsius). Winters are mild with lows averaging around 22 degrees F (−5 degrees C). Monthly rainfall averages around 30 inches (76 cm), making this a dry county experiencing little rainfall during any month other than September through December when there’s also occasional flooding due to heavy rains from Hurricane Harvey which passed through parts of Hudspeth County on August 28th 2017
Stafford was founded in 1821 by John Stafford. The town was named after General Robert E. Lee, who fought in the American Civil War. In 1870, the Texas Railroad Company built a line from Austin to Houston and Stafford became one of its towns. In 1907, the railroad company sold the town to Rice University for $1 million. The university used the money to build a new campus in Stafford and renamed it "Rice University School of Business". In 1945, Rice University merged with the Texas A&M Aggies football team and the school's name changed to "Texas A&M University-Houston".
