Stafford, Texas is a small town in Hudspeth County, Texas, United States. The population was 2,584 at the 2010 census. It is the county seat of Hudspeth County. The community began as a farmstead on the bank of the Trinity River in 1876. A post office was established there in 1878 and named Stafford after Colonel George Stafford, who donated land to make the town site. The first store opened in 1879. By 1900, the population had increased to 412 residents and by 1910 it had reached 2,584 people. At that point, Stafford became an important railroad junction due to its location between Austin and Houston Railroad tracks and its access to both surface transportation and air travel. In 1925, the local school district organize into two systems: one for students in township-wide buildings (including Stafford) and one for students within each of the four wards (based on voting districts). In 1965, Hudspeth County became an independent state and new legislation allowed for more municipalities to be created within Hudspeth County without prior vote by the county commissioners; this led to the merger of three villages - Stafford (including parts of New Braunfels), Flower Mound and Weatherford - into one municipality with a population of 3,883 people at the time of their incorporation. In 1992, Hurricane Andrew destroyed many homes in eastern Hudspeth County including those located near downtown Stafford; as a result of this damage and others caused by Tropical Storm Tracy over Memorial Day weekend 1998-2001 (such as power outages which affected up to 85% of households statewide), Stafford's economy suffered heavily particularly during 2001-2002 when joblessness rates were above 25%. As part of efforts begun since then by Mayor Donny Hardesty aimed at restoring order following some high profile incidents such as Rodney King's acquittal after being stopped on suspicion of curfew violation only weeks earlier; notably increasing police presence aroundtown during public events including parades or funerals while also providing development assistance through grants/loans towards specific land use interests; today's skyline can be seen largely unchanged despite some recent economic setbacks which have impacted property values considerably less than they once did
