Southlake traces its history to 1872 when it was founded as a farming community on the headwaters of the Kenedy River by early settlers from Illinois and Wisconsin. The city proper was platted in 1907 and named after Rear Admiral Samuel P. Southlake (1851-1927), who commanded American naval forces in World War I and II. The original downtown core of Southlake consisted of one block only, bounded by High Street to the north, Elm Street to the south, Kenedy Avenue to the east and west, and White Road to the center. A second downtown block was added in 1923 before being destroyed by fire that year. In 1961, Southlake approved an ordinance proposing that it become an open-air shopping mall with a two-block main concourse flanked by two wings containing over 200 stores across six floors including 20 anchor stores Inaugurated on October 17th 1961 as "The world's first enclosed shopping mall", it quickly became one of America's most popular tourist destinations with more than 2 million visitors annually now touring its more than 400 shops/areas including some Of America's largest retail chains like Macy's & Sears plus top 100 department store chains like JCPenney & Kohl’s along with dozens of other international brands The mall also includes four restaurants/bars/cafes totaling over 160 seats serving breakfast through dinner daily along with several dozen specialty retailers In addition to its retailing diversification; "The Mall" also features extensive entertainment programming including three theaters playing feature films nightly while also featuring several hundred concerts per year both live and taped . Today "The Mall" remains America’s most popular enclosed shopping mall with visitation totals topping 1 billion each year

Southlake is a city in Dallas County, Texas, United States. The population was 46,787 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Dallas-Fort Worth metropolitan area. Southlake was founded in 1875 by J. M. Boudin and others as an agricultural center on the fringes of present-day Dallas. In 1925, Southlake formed a school district with its own town meeting hall and courthouse. The first post office in Southlake was opened in 1881 and operated until 1915; it was located on what is now Elm Street south of Main Street. The city grew rapidly during World War II due to the production of munitions plants across the county and defense spending withinDallas-Fort Worth Metroplex (). In 1949, Southlake annexed neighbouring Flower Mound after that community voted to secede from their own city limits to form a new municipality with a more centralized government structure (). However, this annexation did not take place because Flower Mound's incorporation as a municipality never received the required number of votes (a referendum was needed). As an annexing municipality, South Lake served as home to many governmental officials including Mayor Harry Hardwick (), Commissioners John Witherspoon (), Emmet Flood (), Vernon Ladd ()and Roy Barnes () who all served terms from 1951 through 1976 before moving on to other positions or retiring altogether. In 1975–1976, then-Mayor Hardwick convened a study committee which recommended annexation into SouthLake based upon city services sorely lacking within neighbor Flowermound (). The recommendation led to Township Heights forming two months later outgrowth of City Council decision to annex neighboring townships rather than continue trying to serve multiple municipalities (). Today’s Township Heights borders both North Park (to the east) and East Arlington (to the west). During its early years as an annexing municipality, South Lake struggled economically due largely to lack of manufacturing activity within its borders; however over time southernDallas became more prosperous thanks chiefly to energy production emanating from nearby Fort Worth Federal Reserve Bank building along Interstate 635/Uptown Expressway(). Manufacturing has since become increasingly important inSouthLake’s economy but remains relatively small compared with neighboring cities suchas Garland & Richardson where160 Fortune 500 companies have locatered since 2000 while only 10%of jobs located here are related specificallyto manufacturing accordingTo date there has been no comprehensive study examining economic vibrancyofsouthlake duplicate efforts have focused primarily on downtown developmentrather than neighborhood level analysis SouthLake also offers unique opportunities for businesses outsidethe traditional fields associated with suburban areas such as agriculture or health care whichaccount for nearly half of total business income reported by local entrepreneurs
