Southlake, Texas is a city in Dallas County, Texas, United States. The population was 27,393 at the 2010 census. It is the county seat of Dallas County. Southlake is part of the Dallas-Fort Worth metropolitan area. The settlement at what is now Southlake was founded by pioneers in 1867 as a small town called Prairie View A&M Academy and later renamed to Southlake after Confederate General James Longstreet's plantation in Alabama. In 1907, Southlake became Dallas' first incorporated municipality and remained so until annexation byDallas in 1963. The city's current name originated with its location on the banks of Buffalo Bayou within easy access to downtownDallas. The original name for the city was "Prairie View", but it was changed when it became clear that no one would move to this site because of periodic flooding from Buffalo Bayou (now Lake Trinity). So instead, planners came up with "Southlake" which had already been used by an agricultural community east of Fort Worth called Springtown. At that time there were only about 100 people living in Southlake and most of them were farmers who grew cotton and livestock near their homes on prairies that stretched across much of western Dallas County. In 1912 developers bought land adjoining Clear Fork Township north of downtownDallas for $2 per acre (0·92 km²). They began erecting buildings on what would eventually be known as Main Street - now home to several high-end retail stores including Neiman Marcus and Macy's Department Store - while simultaneously engineering plans for a major streetcar line through downtownDallas that would connect every southern portionofthe Metroplex via Downtown/Southpark Station (later named NorthPark Station).
