Southlake's history goes back to 1852 when Allan Forbes settled on land west of Interstate 10. In 1907, Southlake ISD was created when the adjacent towns of Garland and Flower Mound were consolidated into one municipality. Today, Southlake is home to some ofDallas-Fort Worth's most prominent residents such as Cowboys owner Jerry Jones and NFL quarterback Peyton Manning. The name "Southlake" comes from a Native American word meaning "place where game can be found." The first settler in what would become South Lake County was John Nichols who arrived in 1851. By 1865, there were over 120 families living in what would eventually become South Lake County. In 1876 an act passed by the Texas Legislature named county seat for Garland but this decision never came about because no suitable site could be found for a courthouse within reasonable distance of any populated areas including Garland. On October 1, 1907, due to the consolidation of neighboring towns into one municipality (Garland & Flower Mound), South Lake ISD became operational with its current boundaries which include all but 3 blocks east/west of Loop 610 southbound/northbound (the rest being annexation by Flower Mound).

In 1932, racially segregated buses operated within the city limits; white passengers received free rides while black passengers had to pay a fee to use the buses
