Southlake is a city in Dallas County, Texas, United States. The population was 87,362 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Dallas–Fort Worth Metropolitan Statistical Area. The town of Southlake was platted in 1872 by J. D. Polk and Wm. Hite as an unincorporated community named for General John Custer's command post on the trading post known as "The Spur" about southeast of present-day Southlake on White Settlement Road. The name stuck and the town prospered until it lost its status as a county seat in 1907 to Arlington Heights after Arlington became a consolidated municipality withDallas County. In 1910, landowner James Ewing sold alluvial gold deposits near present-day South Lake to Coke & Lumber Company of Houston for $1 million dollars ($10 million today). As part of the deal, Ewing donated 4 square miles (10 km²) along I-635 to form what would become Southlake Park—the first municipally owned park in Dallas County and one of only four remaining public parks in Texas before annexation by Arlington Heights in 1907. The city annexed Arlington Heights on December 15, 1907 and bestowed upon it the same rights and privileges granted to Southlake by Ewing; including full incorporation into City government under Chapter 522A Ratification Act of 1912 which provided: "That when any incorporated village or town within this State Shall have failed willfully or neglectfully to comply with all lawful requirements thereof as prescribed by law . . . then said failure shall be considered an act punishable by dissolution or revocation of charter." On July 1, 1915 when Dallas County was established from parts of Kaufman and Precinct 3 counties，SouthLake became one unit with other townships within Dallas County as well as Garland and Irving proper which had been separate townships since 1871 when they were included within Kaufman County after their communities were merged into that county following admission into statehood under Republic Act 9permitted consolidation process mandated by state legislature conditioned upon referendum approval pursuant to section 7(a) Constitution article III §15". In order to keep up with the growth of other towns in Midland County, Southlake began to build its own infrastructure such as roads and sewers. This made life much easier for everyone living in the town as there was no need to worry about money coming in from outside sources. One of the most famous people who lived in Southlake during this time was Roy Rogers Sr., who spent many years performing his popular radio show out of his home on Main Street called "The Ranch". Roy Rogers also helped start several businesses within South Lake including one that contributed significantly to its success during those early days: The seed company which he ran until his death in 1998. Other prominent residents ofSouthLake during this time include Texan farmer Jock Mahoney and auto manufacturer Buick Motorsports Limited (later Buick Division). In recent years, some aspects of local history have been overshadowed by more larger events or topics due to changing trends within American culture or media attention towards certain types of communities or industries (e.g., large cities experiencing rapid growth). Nevertheless, some important aspects that remain largely unchanged include memories of patriotic rallies held at county fairs throughout World War II; photos taken by citizens on their front porch during flash floods; stories about how firefighters responded quickly when a house caught fire; First Lady Laura Bush's visit toSouthLake after Hurricane Katrina; and views from atop Main Street looking down onto Trinity River below
