Southlake, Texas is a city located in the Dallas-Fort Worth metropolitan area. The population was 59,521 as of the 2010 census. Southlake has been inhabited by humans since at least 4200 BC. The first written record of Southlake comes from General James Robertson's journal Entry for October 10th, 1793 which noted "a village in this parish" and "an Indian trading post". In 1843, J.B. Spaulding built a sawmill on the edge of town and began to process cotton and other crops in what is now known as Spaulding Park. By 1870, Southlake had a post office, schoolhouse and church. In 1895, Jim Bowie founded Bowie Oil Company in what is now known as Bowie Rancho and began to produce oil wells in Southlake Creek canyon near where today’s University Drive meets US Highway 602. With an initial production rate of 2 barrels/day (compared to Shell’s quota of ten barrels/day), Bowie quickly became one of Texas’ leading oil men and investors. Today, Bowie Rancho still produces crude oil products though its primary product is Texaco gasoline fuel used primarily by automobiles across North Texas. The annexation of Arlington Heights by Dallas made it necessary for Southlake to secede from Arlington Heights during the 1910 Dallas City Council meeting that resulted in the creation ofDallas County with its own government under Mayor James Hoggarty Jr., who represented south Side residents on the councilmember map created pursuant to provisions set out in Article XII section 1(c) of the charter providing for county organization: "No person or persons having property within this city [Arlington Heights], shall be entitled to vote or hold any office within said city." This action effectively severed all social ties between south Side residents living within Arlington Heights' borders and those living west side within Dallas proper - effectively disenfranchising most south Side voters throughout much of Dallas County until after World War II when voting rights were reestablished through reapportionment following annexation into newly formedDallas County along lines more reflective of socio-economic status within northSide neighborhoods outsideof downtown Dallas
