The first settlers to what would become Southlake were James Hance and his family who arrived from Tennessee in 1836. They set up a trading post near what is now called Spring Lake on their land that they donated to the town trustees for the purpose of erecting a schoolhouse, gristmill, bridge over Big Creek (now Little creek), roadstead and other Improvements). On November 14th 1836 James Hance was married to Anna Tryon at Presbyterian church located east of where present day Walnut Street meets Elm street North). Their first born son David Neely Hance was born on this date. In 1837 when James died suddenly at home he bequeathed $1,000 (or $61600 at current prices) to town to be used for any good or general need such as new roads or churches etc., which has been fully applied for by trustees ever since! In 1840 C F Sprague bought 640 acres north of present day Elm St & Walnut St from Nancy Greenough Sprague for $2/acre with intentions of making it into an agricultural center studded with cotton plantations but this never happened due to lack of interest from investors; however some acreage still remains undeveloped today within Southlake limits! Nancy's husband John Sprague did manage to build 3 small stores along Elm Street just west of Walnut Street before he passed away in 1862 aged only 44 years old. One can walk these streets today if one knows where they are! After John Sprague's death his widow Nancy took over management until her own death in 1886!! She leaves behind 4 children: Mrs J H Sprague Decker who lives close by Her late husband’s store; Leroy E Sprague Jr.; Edward M Sprague Sr.; Kenneth W Sprague III all residents hereabouts until their respective deaths young men now age 71 yrs old & 67yrs old respectively......and lastly my grandmother Amanda LSprague currently resides hereabouts 2 blocks NE corner Pinehurst Rd & Walnut St after many years living out her final days alone !!!!! So much for second guessing those 94 years ago…..we are so proud our mother could manage 4 small stores!!!!!!!!! Now THAT'S something special!!!!! Whence Southlake name? From "south" meaning "downstream" or "lower down" because it looked like there wasn't any water available nearby so people built their homes on high ground

Southlake, Texas is a small town located in Cameron County, Texas, on the banks of the Trinity River. The population was 8,837 at the 2000 census. Southlake is home to Southlake High School and Southlake Stadium which are both used for football and other sports. The history of Southlake begins with settlers who arrived in 1836. They were people from Illinois and Missouri. The first settler in what is now Southlake was James Hogg who arrived in 1836. He built a cabin on the bank of the Trinity River. In 1840, another settler named George Freeman bought land from James Hogg. He named his new land Eastland after one of his family members who had died young. In 1847, Colonel John Robertson purchased land east of present-day South Lake from James Hogg for $1,000 cash and 10 acres of wooded land . Colonel Robertson built a house on this property which he called “Robertson” House or “Eastland” House . He also erected a stockade around his house to protect it from raiders during the Mexican–American War (1846-48). Afterward, Robertson continued to use “Robertson” House as his main home until he sold it to Jeptha Turner in 1865 for $5,000 cash . In 1890, local farmers started raising cotton because it was an important crop in that time period. From 1890-1910 they grew more than 1 million bushels of cotton fields here at Eastland Park . At that time there were no railroads connecting Dallas/Fort Worth with south Texas so farmers had to transport their goods by boat or wagon train over the Trinity River and then walk miles through dense forest to get their goods to marketplaces north of Dallas/Fort Worth . To provide transportation for these shipments two wharves were constructed near present-day North Road and White Oak Bayou (now Old Spanish Trail Boulevard) . These wharves remain extant today as part of WestConnex Redevelopment Authority’s CRHwy 6 project which will make way for a new Interstate Highway system when it is completed next year
