Southlake, Texas is a town in Tarrant County, Texas, United States. The population was 9,912 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Fort Worth–Arlington Metropolitan Statistical Area. The first European to set foot in what is now Southlake was Francisco de Miranda on October 24, 1536, when he and his group of Spanish conquistadors landed at San Marcos Island in present-day Tarrant County. In 1827 Elisha Austin founded Austin & Bastrop Railroad and named it for Southlake Manor near where the railroad crossed White Oak Creek. In 1881 Coke Depot Road (now FM 653) was completed connecting Dallas and Fort Worth via Waco and Southlake. The townsite of Southlake sprang up around this depot area as people began farming land near the railroads. By 1907 there were 21 businesses in town with a total population of 3,873; by 1920 that number had grown to 50 with an estimated population of 11,122. In 1928 Iron Springs Dam collapsed due to overuse by farmers who did not properly dam their irrigation systems; as a result floods destroyed homes and churches in nearby villages including Cross Keys (now Dumas), Live Oak Grove (now Flower Mound), Beaumont Mills (now Midland), Pecos City (later Stillwater), Hackberry Hills (later Tomball), Spring Branch Valley (), Carthage Heights (), and Slaughter Prairie (). This event caused major economic losses for many families who lost their homes or businesses along with their livelihoods. The community gathered together to try to rebuild but few succeeded because they could not afford the damages brought on by the floodwaters which totaled $2 million dollars () Restoration started slowly but steadily over time until2002 when new bridge replaced old one that had been washed away by rainsstorms three times since 1960 lake level had risen 1 ft 7 Inches (.5 m). On November 2, 1836, Texas was admitted as the Forty-third State of the United States of America. The area that would become Southlake was originally part of Montague County. In 1853, a group of businessmen led by Captain John S. Folsom donated land to start a town in what is now Southlake. The name for the town was first chosen in honor of General Sam Houston, who had fought in Mexico and had been one of the most successful generals during the Mexican War. After Houston's death in 1836, his nephew and successor as president of Mexico City, Antonio López de Santa Anna decided to rename Southlake after him. Southlake quickly became a thriving community with several stores and a schoolhouse. In 1865, developers James Mays and Hiram Jensley built a new courthouse and jail on what is now First Avenue South which became home to many businesses including cattle drives and agricultural activities. In 1916, when the American Civil War began, Southlake residents chose to remain neutral and did not join any sides but were forced to leave their homes because they were located near Confederate lines. Aftermath included more than 200 casualties from both sides due to artillery barrages exploding around town
