It is the third-largest city in Tarrant County and the largest city east of the Mississippi River. The name "Southlake" comes from a Shawnee word meaning "a place where corn does not grow." The first settler in what is now Southlake was John Beal who came to this area in 1836. He named his land Clearwater because the water there was so clear that he could see all around it. In 1881, James Fenton bought 640 acres (246 hectares) of land northeast of what is now Southlake from A.H. Burnett for $1 per acre ($10 per kilometer). At that time, it was one of the most rural areas in Tarrant County and only had a few homes and businesses scattered throughout it. Fenton started farming and ranching here until 1902 when he decided to move his business to Fort Worth due to its better climate and infrastructure then what he had back home in Central Texas. The following year, Fenton donated 160 acres (64 hectares) of land near downtown Southlake to the townspeople for use as a public park which still remains today as part of downtown Southlake's core area. This donation made Southlake one of the earliest towns in Tarrant County and helped make it an important center for trade and commerce during its early years. In 1912, Jens Petersen founded Peterson’s Department Store on Main Street which became one of the largest department stores west of the Mississippi River until it closed its doors in 1978 after decades inside downtown Dallas/Fort Worth Airport mall location renamed DCT Mall Eastlund Center). In 1924 John Witherspoon opened Witherspoon’s Dry Goods store on Main Street which would become one of North Texas' most well known shopping destinations until it closed its doors in 1984 after many years inside DCT Mall location renamed DFW Airport mall location). The next year saw another big development with Sam Houston National Forest being established just north northwest of town on property that had been donated by Humble Oil co-founder Sam Houston along with other forest property within minutes thereof while also opening up some new tracts within town limits giving much needed open space within town boundaries thus creating more density without impacting services or qualityof life too much like what has occurred since just prior thereto even tho annexation & growth continue unabated herein notwithstanding thru various rezoning efforts currently under way or former plans & promises made thereby

Southlake, Texas is a city in Midland County, Texas, United States. The population was 31,723 as of the 2010 census. It is the westernmost city in Midland County and surrounds the City of Austin on two sides. The first humans to live in what is now Southlake were Paleo-Indians who hunted and gathered resources near what is now Slaughter Lake. The area became known for its cattle until after the American Civil War when carpetbaggers came through Central Texas looking for land to settle. They brought with them their own herds of livestock and began to grazed off of the local cactus pads that had been used by the aboriginal people for food. Texas Rangers were hired during this time to protect settlers from Indians and outlaws who lived near or within easy distance of Southlake. In 1872, J.M. Waddell platted Southlake on land that he had purchased from Comanche chief Cochise; it was then named after him (Waddell also founded Waco). The town quickly grew thanks to its location at a crossroads where travelers could buy goods they couldn’t find any other way or trade goods they brought back with them from their travels across Central America or Mexico such as beans, cornmeal and other items needed for cooking over open fires while awaiting their turn at market in Wichita Falls or Temple University in Dallas which were 2 miles away respectively. In 1876–77, James Hays formed an oilrig by creating wells deep water offshore using his dredge called “Hays Dredge No 1″ which created one of the largest oil fields in history including some that still stand today! The name “Southlake” originated from this event as it was given to him by General Sam Houston because he thought it would be a more fitting name for an oil field than Wichita Falls or Temple University which both received namesakes only after becoming major cities! During World War II, Southlake sent citizens into Building #1 (the main building) to help out with military production / research due to shortages of housing elsewhere in Midland County! This was also one of only a few times during wartime when civilians were allowed inside government buildings! After World War II ended there continued growth as businesses opened up throughout downtown Southlake giving many people jobs right outside their homes! By 1960, most everyone living within spitting distance walked so there wasn’t much need for cars until later on! Downtown started getting built up again but slowly because no one wanted development next door!:) A big change happened when Interstate 45 went through town linking all those new suburbs along I-45!! When I-45 came through town everything changed!!!! All these apartments popped up overnight without any traffic impact!!!!!!!!!!!!! That being said though things are changing again like plans are being made to torn down Main Street between State Fairgrounds & downtown southpark…..I don’t know if that will happen but check back soon!!!
