Southlake is a small town in Tarrant County, Texas, United States. The population was 9,711 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Fort Worth–Arlington metropolitan area. Southlake was founded by General John A. Woolridge on December 12, 1872 as a rancho in what is now the Town of Southlake. The first post office opened in Southlake on February 12, 1873. The name of the town originated from General John A. Woolridge's purchase of Rancho San Antonio de los Alamos (now Alamosa) from Don José Castilla y Ramos on December 12, 1872. In 1901 Southlake had a population of 10 residents and an agricultural society with five hogs per family raised for slaughtering cattle and pigs to supply merchants in Fort Worth and Arlington. In 1907 there were 6 businesses closed due to fire insurance rates going up; by 1920 there were only two businesses left open in town - one grocery store and one dry goods store In 1928 Gertrude Marcy Heck founded her own clothing line called "Hickory Hollidays" which continued until 1961 when it was merged into Sears Roebuck & Co., then fell victim to industry consolidation In 1951 local citizens organized their own school district which became known as the "South Lake Independent School District." According to the Handbook of Texas Online: "On April 1, 1956, South Lake ISD consolidated with neighboring Garland Independent School Districts [to form] Tarrant County State High School District No.-1". As part of this merger several high schools closed including Beaumont-Port Arthur High School (1957), Pekin Valley High School (1959), Hockaday High School (1960), Vernon Hills Middle/High School (1962) and finally Northside Junior/Senior High Schools (1963). On September 15th 1957 all but one building on Main Street burned down leaving just three buildings standing with four classes inside each - this event is commonly referred to as the “South Lakes Fire”." The new Tarrant County State High SchoolDistrict #1 opened its doors on October 1st 1958 with 35 students attending nine grades levels: 9th-12th grade; 11th-12th grade; 5th-8th grade; 8th-9th grade; 3rd-5th grades.. Currently there are over 400 students enrolled through 7 different junior high schools located throughout downtown Southlake as well as many annexations within Tarrant County government buildings like county courthouse Annexation #2(2013), jail Annexation #4(2013) and status reports for various agencies such as sheriff's department annexation #6(2013).
