Southlake is a town in Tarrant County, Texas, United States. The population was 8,948 at the 2010 census. Southlake is part of the Dallas–Fort Worth metropolitan area. The first settler in what would become Southlake was J.D. McCoy who arrived in 1853 and named it after his father's home county, Virginia. The community grew rapidly under the leadership of General John Hogg, who incorporated it in 1871 as a town with a population of 150 people. A school district was organized in 1886 and Southlake became an independent municipality on December 1, 1907. In 1911, construction began on what would become the largest shopping mall in Texas when the Cowboys Club bought land east of I-30 for $1 million dollars for a new complex that would include 400 stores and three hotels including the world-famous Ritz-Carlton Hotel (now called Radisson Blu). The shopping center opened to traffic on November 15, 1914 and quickly became one of Tarrant County's most important commercial centers. In 1923 Southlake voters passed an ordinance allowing religious groups to open their own schools within city limits without having to apply to the local school board; this led to creation of First Baptist Church (later Donelson Christian School) which has operated continuously since then. In 1957 Revitalization Corporation erected a new sports stadium adjacent to First Baptist Church which helped give South Lake its nickname "The Heartland." During World War II many businesses closed due to wartime restrictions such as importation quotas; however most reopened shortly afterwards once those restrictions were lifted. At war's end business growth slowed but did not stop as many companies moved back into town until well into the 1990s when offshore oil drilling began making South Lake an increasingly attractive place to live and work

The name "Southlake" originated from the Houstons' ranch south of town. A post office called Southlake was established in 1892, and remained in operation until it closed in 1957. The first white person to live in what is now Southlake was John Witherspoon who settled there around 1836. He named his land after his father (and future governor of Texas) James Witherspoon. In 1843, Jno Phelps set up a sawmill and store on the Clear Fork of the Trinity River near present day Southlake. By 1850, most residents had relocated to Arlington due to repeated epidemics of smallpox that swept through Archer County during that year. In 1865, General Robert E Lee fought at Perryville and then took refuge at Fort Worth before heading back east for Vicksburg where he became Commander-in-Chief of Union army forces under Ulysses S Grant's command. On July 29th 1865 Confederate General Jubal Early attacked Union positions at Lexington Road and Blue Gap Creek just outside present day Southlake while pursuing General Robert E Lee northward into Arkansas with an army composed mostly of cavalry units supported by artillery units under Major General James Longstreet leading an infantry brigade under Colonel Alfred Pleasonton from Corinth, Mississippi across Brazos River into Louisiana Territory west of Mobile Bayou before finally reaching Huntsville Alabama on September 3rd 1865 just days after President Abraham Lincoln's assassination which ended the American Civil War II when rebel General Jubal Early surrendered at Greensboro Virginia following a three week siege ending with his capitulation on September 9th 1865 less than five miles from scheduled battle site known as Appomattox Court House today located southeast corner of Interstate 20 and Elm Street inside old Springwood Cemetery satellite map . After Reconstruction took hold in AmericaAUDIO: After Reconstruction takes hold in America It wasn't until World War II did Southlake become an important economic center within Archer County because many new industries were created including aluminum products manufacturing plants related to airplane production due to wartime expansionism by then-President Franklin D Roosevelt as well as defense contractor Lockheed Aircraft Corporation located on what are now I-20/I-35 corridors linking Dallas/Fort Worth and Washington DC airports while also providing thousands jobs creating much needed economic stability throughout much rural eastern Archer County during World War II due largely to government support programs such as Home Ownership Assistance Programs (HOA), Federal Works Administration (FWA), Agricultural Adjustment Act (AAA) which subsidized farmers' prices; Temporary Farm Labor Contracts (TFLCs) which provided work opportunities for unemployed National Guardsmen trained for agriculture service during wartime; Negro Servicemen's Industrial Recovery Act (NSIRA) program which allocated profits generated from racial discrimination against Negro Americans by North Carolina textile manufacturers resulting in whites switching production away from black workers towards Caucasian workers; post war reconstruction assistance program administered by USDA Western Area Office - TXWAGA which included money allocation for purchase or rehabilitation of housing needs; military veteranalyses conducted within local governments through Department Of Veterans Affairs - VEAPA utilizing aerial photo data acquisition technology acquired during World War III era
On December 6, 1836, the town of Southlake was founded by General Sam Houston and his army after they drove the Mexican forces from Texas. The town grew rapidly and soon had a population of over 10,000 people. On May 21, 1859, Southlake became the capital of Texas when Austin was moved to the city.
