In 1951 new developers purchased Goodyear Ranch and started building homes which continue to be built to this day. In 1958 they shifted their focus to business when they opened the first town hall in Texas! They currently have over 20 buildings including six churches and three high schools across four campuses--one each at Fort Worth North Central High School (Forth Worth), Dallas McKinney CISD (Dallas), Southlake Independent School District (Southlake), and Temple University Houston-Sugar Land Campus (Houston). Southlake, Texas is a city in Kaufman County, Texas, United States. The population was 24,569 at the 2010 census. Southlake is the most populous municipality in Kaufman County and fifth-most populous in the state of Texas. The city's namesake comes from a Cherokee word meaning "park" or "nest." The first settlers to Southlake were surveyors who surveyed the area between Arno and Wichita Falls on October 1, 1836. On December 12 of that year, General Santa Anna appointed John C. McCulloch as Indian Agent for this area and he began issuing land grants to Creek Indians throughout Kaufman County. In 1839, James Hance built a dam on the San Jacinto River which created Lake Hance downstream from town limits. In 1845, James Hance donated land for a Methodist church and cemetery outside of town limits which became known as First Methodist Church Cemetery located today on East Seventh Street east of Interstate 10 just south of Ulysses S. Grant Boulevard (now I-10 West). In 1865–1866 Confederate General Robert Ewell established himself at Fort Worth before moving westward into central Texas during the Civil War to take over command of Union forces operating in Central Texas. Heading south through Kaufman County towards downtown Fort Worth on July 15th 1865 he encountered Mexican President Antonio Lopez de Santa Anna who had halted his advance southward across Central Texan border at Cedar Hill (near present day Grapevine) after sending an informer back to Mexico disclosing that Confederate forces had crossed into his country unannounced near Waxahachie Mills late June 1865 while under cover of darkness with only seven men including one artilleryman accompanyingGeneral Nathan Bedford Forrest’s cavalry brigade attacking his small force numbering about two hundred horsemen supported by two cannon squads under Major Thomas Jenson whose unit patrolled “behind” Forrest’s column). Lopez de Santa Anna ordered his army pursuit but upon reaching Georgetown – about southeast of Fort Worth – found it surrounded by Confederate infantry and artillery fire from positions high up atop hills overlooking downtown Fort Worth; he retired beyond Dallas where he later died after intense fighting against Union forces at Danville (present day Arlington Heights).
