Southlake is a small town in Tarrant County, Texas, United States. The population was 5,034 at the 2010 census. It lies on Interstate 35 and is located about 20 miles (30 km) south of Fort Worth. In 1907, Laddie Hensley donated land on which Baylor University would be built; the university's first expansion occurred during World War I when enrollment soared from 100 students to more than 1,000 students thanks in part to munitions contracts that were given to Southlake Mills Incorporated (later known as Dow Chemical Co.) By 1920, Baylor had outgrown its original campus site and increased its enrollment by 25%. To accommodate this growth, Baylor purchased additional land east of downtown from Kessinger and hired architects firm Russell & Russell to design what would become known as "the grandstand" oncampus: a mixture of red brick with elaborate terra cotta details surrounding an open Lawn seating 6500 spectators for football games and up to 2800 for basketball games; today's Old Main Building houses both portions of this structure. As Baylor grew older and began looking for new digs – including construction on adjacent facilities such as McLennan Stadium – plans were drawn up for what would become "The Oval". After much debate within Baylor among faculty members over whether or not they should demolish existing structures in order build anew upon an oval-shaped plot measuring 350 acres (140 hectares), decision was made not only because no new buildings could be erected without violating collegiate architectural guidelines but also because doing so would have presented a challenge/opportunity package hitherto unavailable within North Texas college townsfolk: funds could be raised through luxury events such as golf tournaments sponsored by local hospitals or foundation giving grants directly relatedto health care research projects housed at nearby Medical College Of Texas at Dallas (MCTD).
