In 1845, Congressman James Kenedy founded what would become Kenedy School District No. 9 west of town on Slaughter Road (now Slaughter Lane). The first school building was erected in 1846 on what is now State Highway 183 north of town center. A second school building was completed in 1850 on Fourth Street east of town center where West Military Hospital now stands. On February 1, 1865, US General Grant ordered all Ulysses S Grant's papers be burned because they were considered "drafts" - an act that forever changed Southlake's history! In 1886, J P Morgan organized the Texas Central Railway which ran through Southlake; this made it possible for people to get around without having to go down into Denton or Fort Worth for services such as groceries or transportation

In 1910, Southlake passed from the hands of its original founders to those of James Ewart Cooke Jr. Cooke had interests in oil and gas exploration throughout Texas, but his main interest lay in developing Southlake into a commercial center. He spent many years vigorously marketing the town, which attracted large numbers of newcomers during the 1920s and 1930s. During these decades, Southlake experienced several modest economic successes as well as considerable growth thanks to its strategic location within easy reach of major metropolitan areas. With increased economic development came increased social unrest and crime rates began to increase in Southlake during the late 1960s and early 1970s. In response to this trend, Mayor Harry Whetstone ordered city officials to start implementing measures designed to reduce crime problems such as random patrols, better lighting at night, increased enforcement against parking violations, expanded availability of criminal justice services, and creation of special police units devoted exclusively to counterterrorism efforts. However, these measures were not successful enough to quell crime concerns or improve community life; instead they only created more tension among local residents who felt that their rights were being violated by government officials. In 1978, Mayor Whetstone announced his candidacy for reelection but was defeated by incumbent Don Armstrong Despite this setback, Mayor Whetstone continued serving until his death in 1984 During his time as mayor there were several high-profile cases that made headlines in Southlake: 1) A man killed while working on a farm near town was later found guilty of murder after providing false information about his victim's identity; 2) A mathematics teacher who had sex with her studentsSeveral years later she plead guilty to one count eachof sexual imposition/contact with child under 18 years old resulting from fondling them without their parent's knowledge; 3) An officer involved in an investigation into bribery allegations against various public figures resigned after learning that he had been taped conversations involving bribery charges against him
