Southlake is a city in Dallas County, Texas, United States. The population was 362 at the 2010 census. It was founded by settlers in 1881. Southlake is located on the edge of the Dallas–Fort Worth metroplex and is part of its eastern edge. Southlake began as a small farming community on the southern edge of what is now Dallas County. By 1890, it had a school and two businesses. In 1901, Southlake's first post office opened, and by 1907 it had a population of 506 residents. The town grew rapidly during World War I when many Americans moved to North America to serve in combat; the town became known for its "chicken-butter" factory which produced war bonds for the United States government. After World War I ended, South Lakes continued to grow as an agricultural center with cotton production accounting for most of its income until Prohibition made liquor illegal in Texas in 1920. In 1925, South Lakes incorporated as a city under the name "South Lake". It grew rapidly during the 1930s due to its location within easy access to Dallas/Fort Worth Airport and other important metropolitan areas; by 1940 it had 1,200 residents and was listed as one ofDallas' "largest cities". However, automobiles soon replaced locomotives as primary means of transportation within cities such as Dallas; by 1950 South Lakes had only 73 residents living in downtown while 459 lived elsewhere in annexed villages During this time period also saw some significant changes within South Lakes: Mayor Harry Sperry became politicized after serving three terms on City Council before being elected mayor in 1954; he then used his power to increase spending on infrastructure projects such as new schools and streetlights despite recommendations from council members who felt that these investments would be more effective if done through funds generated from property taxes rather than general revenue increasing opportunities for corruption among city officials In 1957 city voters passed an ordinance establishing limits on how much tax revenue could be raised from single-family homes without voter approval; this ordinance remains one of Texas' most restrictive land use regulations today In 1974 Mayor John Sheffield inducted into the Hallowed halls Of TX City Halls (Mostiger) due Tohismorethan 40 years service As Mayor Of South Lake

Southlake, Texas is a city located in Dallas County, Texas. The population was 97,828 as of the 2010 census and it is the fourth largest city in Dallas County. Southlake began as an agricultural community known as Buena Vista. In 1881, Edwin Baylor founded Baylor University here and named it in honor of his father and mentor, Sam Houston. Rancho Buena Vista was acquired by Drury Lane Coal Company in 1907 and became part of the First National Bank chain. The company operated a mill at Buena Vista for many years before closing it in 1979. The mill site now houses the Southlake ISD District Park. The area that would become Southlake was first settled by Scots-Irish immigrants from Ireland during the early 1800s. During this time, land south of White Rock Creek was claimed by various groups including the Comanches, Kiowas and Texans who called themselves "Noche de Año" or New Year's Eve (). One group of Scots-Irish settlers named their town after Stonewall Jackson which they also nicknamed "Newburgh". After Land Grant Act of 1836 was passed allowing for slavery to be abolished throughout Texas, some slaves moved to what is now Southlake to take up free land while others continued living on their plantations until Freedmen's Bureau ran its own registers documenting freedmen's residence status between 1865 & 1870. This included those living near Brazoria Street (now Elmwood) where they had built their first homes; these dwellings served as both homes for white Texans and black workers on local farms during Reconstruction period when African Americans were prohibited from owning property or working on white soil (). Many Scots-Irish immigrants who had taken up free land eventually decided to stay put due to lack of other opportunities available within miles radius such as transportation facilities or good schools (). In 1902 City Council voted unanimously to renameBuena Vista after Mrs Sarah Jane Goodhue donated $5,000 for a public school system here that would serve all classes kindergarten through high school students with no tuition fee necessary. Mrs Goodhue later served on City Council from 1912-1920; she donated most of her money towards building new school buildings across town which would then house both public and private schools until annexation into Arlington Heights occurred in 1924). In 1916 Rev G Fenton organized Indian Mission #4 here becoming one of earliest religious denominations recorded in Dallas County outside Houston Methodist Church (founded by John Whitehead). In 1920 City Council voted unanimously to renameSouthlake after General James Boggs USMC Commander killed at Anacostia River during WWI – one year prior Confederate General Robert E Lee had surrendered at Appomattox Court House resulting in Union victory over Confederate forces at Siege Of Petersburg . With nearly two centuries of history behind Southlake - including countless contributions made by individuals associated with the city - players have helped make this place one of America’s top tourist destinations attracting more than 2 million visitors each year since its designation by U2 frontman Bono back in 2003 – making it justly proud among North Texan cities like Austin & Dallas!
In 1836, the Republic of Texas was founded, and the first white man to set foot in what is now Southlake was Jack Hill. Hill built a cabin on the banks of the Trinity River, and soon started trading with Native Americans. In 1840, he founded the town of Southlake on land that he had purchased from the Creek Nation. The town quickly became a center for cotton cultivation, and by 1850 it had a population of around 350 people. The discovery of oil in 1901 led to an increase in oil production in Southlake, and by 1916 it had become one of Texaco's main petrochemical plants. The plant closed in 1984, but has since been repurposed as a mixed-use development called "Southlake Commons."
