Southlake is a city in Tarrant County, Texas, United States. The population was 37,539 at the 2010 census. It is the largest city located in Tarrant County. Southlake is part of the Dallas-Fort Worth metropolitan area. The town of Southlake was founded by settlers from Kentucky in 1851 and was named for James K. Polk, who had been U.S. president when it was founded. In 1885, a railroad station and depot were built here and served as the center of early trade with the surrounding counties. The town became an important industrial center during World War II with production of munitions and other goods done at various plants including Pecan Plantation Paper Company, Consolidated Telephone Company, Dow Chemical Company and others until those companies went out of business in the mid-1970s; however, post-war Southlake's heavy reliance on agriculture has kept it one of Texas' most prosperous cities since its incorporation as a municipality in 1923; today's economy includes several high technology companies such as BorgWarner (now Verizon)Southwestern Bell Telephone Company (now AT&T), Kelly Services Inc., Eastman Kodak Co., Tyson Foods Inc., Hewlett-Packard Co., Live Oak Casino Resort & Spa - now known as Riviera Beach Casino Resort - and much more besides Southlake first appeared on maps around 1847 when General John Custer passed through these parts on his journey to Mexico City; he called this spot "Nacoochee", meaning "place where water pours out". A few years later some Englishmen settled down around what is now known as Town Lake afterthe Indian Removal Act forced all Native Americans living west of Houston to leave their homes between 1794-1837 inclusive. When General Sam Houston advanced into that region late in 1836 he found Mexican troops entrenched near what is now Interstate 45 north of Town Lake preparatory to attack him forceily across Brazoria Bayou but instead marched his army northeast overland towards Palo Alto Pass only to be turned back by General Antonio López de Santa Anna who then ordered his forces march southward along Arkansas River towards San Jacinto Hills while Houston moved upriver parallel to this route under cover of darkness so as not to be discovered In fact there are several versions about where Nacoochee actually came from: one version says that American Major John Fayette led 300 men northwest from Fort Bend County via Brazoria Creek against orders from Mexican general José Joaquin Herrera y Costilla who wantedonlyto drive Texans out of Texas; another version claims that two American traders – Samuel Biddle and Nathaniel Gibbs – discovered land lying east side Trinity River just upstream from present day downtown SouthLake while traveling through Lamar County on their way home after trading goods with Indians near present day IH 35 south of Dallas on November 15th or December 9th 1784; they named their find "Nacoochee" after Chief Natchez's daughter Ninnee Ocala whom they met along their travels One story has even suggests that Spanish explorer Hernando de Soto may have crossed into North America via what is now Midland Beach near Clearwater Harbor before landing at Brazoria Bayou about 12 miles due east of downtown SouthLake circa 1440 AD which would place Nacoochee nearby modern day Wexford Ferry Landing although no evidence exists confirming or disproving this claim
In 1836, the Republic of Texas was founded. The area that would become Southlake was part of this new country. The first residents in what is now Southlake were farmers and their animals. In 1837, a post office was established in the town, and mail was brought to the town by horse and buggy. By 1840, Southlake had a school, Methodist church, and two stores. A sawmill was built in 1850, and a grist mill in 1852. In 1861, Confederate forces attackedSouthlake while its citizens were voting on whether to secede from the United States. nine people were killed in the attack. In 1865, Southlake became an independent municipality-a decision made by its citizens after being annexed by Dallas County. In 1870the north side of town became called NorthPark and south side became EastPark
