In 1954, SouthHouston merged with Sugar Land to become one of Tarrant County's five cities. In 2000, SouthHouston again rejoined Harris County when it became an incorporated town within Tarrant County. Today, SouthHouston continues to be a vibrant community that serves as a bastion for cultural diversity and entrepreneurship. With its thriving arts and culture scene and easy access to shopping malls nationwide, SouthHouston has been dubbed "The Village That Never Sleeps."

South Houston was founded in 1836 by General Sam Houston as the first Spanish settlement in Texas. The town quickly became a center of trade and transportation, and its founders saw it as an opportunity to build a valuable port on the Texas coast. The town grew rapidly, and by 1845 it had become a bustling commercial center with warehouses, mills, and cotton plantations. In 1849, South Houston was named the capital of the Provisional government of Texas following the Mexican-American War. After the war, South Houston reverted to Spanish rule, but its growth continued until 1871 when it was annexed into American territory. The years from 1870 to 1891 were difficult for South Houston; its merchants struggled against competition from American towns such as Galveston and Dallas. However, because of its location at the mouth of Buffalo Bayou (now known as Kirby Drive), SouthHouston prospered through shipping goods both inland and out to sea. In 1880, however, Hurricane Clara struck southern Texas; much damage was done to infrastructure and many people were killed or injured. This hurricane caused great concern among local officials who realized that without heavy investment in infrastructure they would be vulnerable during future natural disasters. In 1890, after years of debate between Americans and Mexicans over who should be in control of Texan soil after independence from Spain was granted Centennial year celebrations across America including Seville Cathedral’s performance “Orquesta Patriótica Mexicana” honoring Mexico’s entry into federation on July 16th (1891), decision was made for south Texans - men over women - nominated by their respective legislatures to form a new political entity called Republic under Ulysses S Grant which would administer all aspects within state boundaries with Santa Anna still headquartering Austin due east... overall I believe this choice helped preserve Anglo power & privilege within our midst while Mexicans slowly lost their voice & rights

In 1860, SouthHouston became the capital of Texas after Mexico ceded its sovereignty to the United States. The city hosted many historic events during its years as the state's capital, including the Battle of Fort Sumter in 1861 and the Texan Revolution in 1876.
