South Houston is a small town in Harris County, Texas, United States. It is located on the bank of Buffalo Bayou and has a population of about 33,000. The name "Houston" was given to the community by General Sam Houston in 1835 as part of his plan for the future city of Huntsville. South Houston began to grow slowly until World War II when it exploded in population growth due to military construction and other economic activities. Today, South Houston remains an agricultural center with many hog farms and poultry operations. The downtown area is home to a few large retailers such as Sears and JCPenney. South Houston began as a farming community that grew around two small ranches known as White Sands and Katy Rancho de la Garza. These properties were acquired by John Kirby in 1849 and became known as Kirby's Rancho de las Brisas (Kirby's Ranch). In 1875, Kirby sold his ranch to James Hogg who renamed it Hoggs Prairie after himself. In 1902, Hoggs Prairie was bought by George Waddell who moved his cattle business there from Lubbock. Waddell sold the business to Ewing Marion Kauffman in 1913 and Hauffman renamed it SouthHouston after Kaufman inherited the property from him. The first housing development in South Houston was called White Sands Village which consisted of single-family homes built between 1911-1920 on land donated by Mrs Ida Vail Hanson. After World War II ended, more people moved into SouthHouston including many servicemen returning from World War II because the local economy had boomed thanks to military construction projects such as the Mound Bayou Bridge Project and Air Force Base Killeen construction project that took place during 1945-1946. During this time period, many businesses opened up in downtown SouthHouston including several restaurants including Hardee's Drive-In restaurant which opened its doors on July 15th 1946; Regal Ballroom nightclub which opened its doors on December 12th 1946; American Legion Post No 927 where dances were held at night before being turned over to amateur boxing tournaments; First Baptist Church where services were held at night before becoming an auto body shop; Methodist Episcopal church which served meals during weekends while also hosting dances each weeknight.; Stonewall Jackson Elementary School where students learned about free speech through protests against racial discrimination.; Parklane Shopping Center which housed four independently run stores plus one service station along Buffalo Bayou between University Boulevard/Hwy 249 eastbound (now I-10)and Loop 610 westbound (now US 95); Barnes & Noble bookstore opening November 1st 1947 on what used to be Mellon Auditorium street corner near Morrison High School; The Cotton Bowl race track located off FM 1960 eastbound just south of I-10 exit 17.; Film projector rental store open September 24th 1948 across from First Baptist Church while also having a movie theater inside with a seating capacity of 350 (); JCPenney department store opening October 10th 1951 using former Bank Of America building next door north of Morrison High School.; Brown Derby restaurant opens November 6th 1953 across from Barnes & Noble bookstore;; Ewing Marion Kauffman Plazas shopping center opens May 19th 1955 adjacent to Southern Living magazine Store ; Magnolia Shopping Center opens adjacent Baylor hospital;; Regal Ballroom nightclub closes down January 20th 1958 due to lack of customers;; First Baptist Church becomes Brazos Christian College Chapel;; Joe Frazier Boxing arena opens February 28th 1959 adjacent TOA Banknorthwestexchange side lot.. On March 8th 1959 Dr Pepper Enterprises announced plans for their own KOHLER baseball stadium located just north Main Street eastof I-10 exit 240 (now Lowndes Park Parkway).
