South Houston is a city in Harris County, Texas, United States. The population was 105,391 at the 2010 census. It is the second most populous city in Harris County after Houston. South Houston is also one of the fastest-growing cities in Texas. The City of South Houston was founded on December 5, 1911 by James Hogg and his brother-in-law, Johnnie Hodges. Mr. Hodges donated land for the city and construction began on July 1, 1912. The original town site was bounded by FM 1960 to the north, IH 35 to the east, Loop 610 East to the south and Sam Rayburn Boulevard to the west. On January 8, 1921 a charter amendment was passed authorizing new incorporations with names such as "Houston Heights", "Cypress Heights" and "Southwest Heights". On October 25 of that year it was decided that all of these new incorporations should be consolidated into one municipality under the name of SouthHouston until further order could be obtained from higher authorities. This action which followed caused much commotion within SouthHouston as there were many who felt they had been taken advantage of by their respective incorporation promoters. Nevertheless on November 3rd an ordinance was passed approving consolidation and designating Main Street West as its downtown business district with streets running north/south bisecting this commercial thoroughfare being called Constitution Avenue North/South (later renamed Lamar Park Avenue). The first mayor of SouthHouston was Jock O'Connell who served from 1912 until 1916 when he resigned due to ill health; Jock's successor William Goode served from 1916 until 1920 when he also resigned due to ill health; then future Mayor Harry Hardwick took office from 1920 until 1923 when he also resigned due to illness; finally Clyde Ewing became Mayor effective September 6th 1924 after winning a runoff against O'Connell who ran unopposed. During Hardwick's term various improvements were made including annexation of portions of LeagueCity along IH 35 while funds were available for this purpose; addition of race schools within SouthHouston limits while money still remained available; construction commenced on what would become Rice University campus across Loop 610 East from downtown while still money remained available although some students initially moved off campus because they did not feel safe living near so many African Americans during this time period

The history of South Houston, Texas begins with the arrival of Spanish colonists in the early 1800s. The area that now makes up South Houston was part of the Presidio de San Antonio de Bexar (present-day Texas State Capitol), and Spanish colonists were using the area for grazing and hunting purposes. In 1821, Mexican authorities granted land to Francisco Alvarado to develop as a town, but development never began because Alvarado lacked funding. In 1845, General Sam Houston regained presidial power in Mexico after defeating Mexican forces at the Battle ofSan Jacinto and assumed control over Texan territory. As part of this new regime, Houston designated SouthHouston as a military post on March 20, 1845. The town was renamed Houston on October 15th, 1845 in honor of Captain John Fayette Houston who had led an expedition against Santa Anna's army two years earlier. AsHouston grew and its population increased, it became necessary to build transportation infrastructure to support its growing population. A first bridge was built over Buffalo Bayou in 1846; this bridge is now known as Interstate 610. In 1865, Mayor James Kline established a school system which eventually served all of Harris County. The city limits were expanded to include portions of annexed extraterritorial counties in 1870 and 1888 respectively; these expansions resulted in increased traffic congestion and limited development around downtownHouston due to land scarcity. However, during World War II construction began on I-10 which connected downtownHouston with Gulfportand other major cities across America via highway; this project helped spur economic growth around DowntownHouston throughout the late 1940s through the 1950s and 1960s
