In 1865, when Congress passed the National Act providing for annexation of Texas (the first such act), Austin negotiated with Congressman John Lewis to include South Houston as part of that annexed territory. As American troops withdrew from Buffalo Bayou during World War II, many Texans decided to stay put and fight on soil that had been their homes for centuries. This migration led to what is now known as "The Great Migration." Many African Americans migrated from Alabama to TX during this time due to political discrimination throughout most of America; whites only began hiring black drivers and mechanics after passage of laws granting voting rights to all citizens in states receiving federal aid under the Civil Rights Act of 1964 (and then greatly expanding those rights following passage of the Voting Rights Act Amendments). In 1947 Brazoria County commissioners voted not to annex South Houston because they felt it would deprive other counties within Brazoria County (which also included Galveston) of a potential pooling resources that could have resulted in an even higher concentration growth potential within Brazoria County alone – something that had been desired by both Galveston residents and county officials alike since before annexation efforts ever started! A few years later on January 1st 1959 - just over 60 years ago - Brazoria County formally became a unified county with its own government & budget! And so begins one very long tradition where our county continues today...to work diligently together towards common goals!

Today SouthHouston is home to over 100 businesses including major retailers such as Sam’s Club, Sears Holdings Corporation, Walmart Supercenter, Wildsmith Farms Dairy Store & Creamery (now Compass Books), IHOP restaurant chain with its world headquarters located within city limits since 1997,[citation needed] MastercardUS Headquarters since 2003,[citation needed]and many more smaller businesses which make it an economically vibrant community that offers excellent schools and public services.[1][2][3] In recent years much progress has been made by local officials within Mayor Sylvester Turner's vision for Downtown Houston – turning it into a bustling hub for commerce with open space between Main Street and Travis Park providing additional retail,, more manufacturing/services districts downtown.,[4][5]and new hotels like Marriott Marquis Houston Airport hotel being built right next to Hobby Airport that will serve as yet another layer of visitation to support this rapidly growing metropolis
In 1836, General Sam Houston founded the Republic of Texas from what is now Houston County. The Republic was proclaimed by Houston on February 2, 1836 and lasted until March 4, 1837 when Mexican forces under General Antonio Lopez de Santa Anna invaded and defeated the republic.
