South Houston is named for General Sam Houston, who fought and won the Battle of San Jacinto during the Mexican-American War. The land that makes up today's south Houston was first settled by Texans in 1836 and was part of what is now Humble County. The town ofugar Land was founded on November 3, 1836 by Colonel John Fenton Smith as a post office under the name "New West". On January 1, 1840, New West became an independent municipality under the name "Houston". In 1848, Brazoria County formed from parts of Harris and Brazoria Counties and New West became Brazoria City Limits. In 1861 when Texas seceded from Mexico, Houston became its capital and remained so until 1865 when Austin took over as the state capital. In 1871 Brazoria City Limits were annexed to Austin making it an independent city again with its own mayor and council system. In 1907 South Houston consolidated with other nearby cities to form what is today known as Harris County (later renamed Dallas). As part of this consolidation process many businesses within South Houston were given new names such as American Paper Mill Company (now Dow Chemical), King Cotton gin (now White Sands Pipeline), First National Bank of America/Houston Branch #1 (now Wells Fargo) and Gulfport Lumber Company (now PSN Logistics). In 1921 South Houston merged with League City to form League City-SouthHouston which still exists today as one of Harris County's largest economic engines with more than $5 billion in sales last year alone!
One of the earliest settlements in South Houston was a small community known as Cottage Grove. The land that is now South Houston was first owned by members of the Rice family. In 1836, John Hogg, an American Revolutionary War veteran and member of the Texas House of Representatives, purchased 2,000 acres within what is today South Houston from the Rice family. This purchase allowed Hogg to build his ranch and establish himself as one of the wealthiest landowners in Texas. Over time, other settlers followed Hogg's lead and began to settle in South Houston. By 1860, there were over 100 residents living inSouthHouston. The area that is now SouthHouston was originally part of Harris County. On November 3rd, 1836, Texas Congress passed an act which divided Harris County into two parts – East Harris County and West Harris County. The new county would be named after James Kenedy (who had served as Governor of Texas at the time) and General Sam Houston (the nephew of President George Washington). Kenedy intended for WestHarrisCounty to become a center for agricultural production while EastHarrisCounty would continue to be populated primarily by farmers and their families. However, this plan never came to fruition because most of EastHarrisCountrymen moved out when they realized that they couldn't make a living farming in what was then called "the Lone Star State". In 1839-40, another group of Texans decided to take up residence in what is now SouthHouston because they felt it would be a better place to live than near Dallas or Austin due to its isolation from those cities and its access to natural resources such as oil wells. The town name originated with these settlers –SouthHouston meant "place where all these people are coming." At first there were only 30 residents living inSouthHouston but by 1850 it had grown to over 100 people!
