South Houston is located in the southernmost reaches of Houston, and as such it has a rich history that dates back to the early 1800s. The city was originally known as Brazoria County and was founded by Texans referred to as “Brazos”. The name Brazoria comes from a creek that ran through the area and its namesake, Brazoria River. In 1836, Texas became an United States state and Brazoria County was transferred to Texas. The area now known as South Houston was settled by the Caddo people in the late 18th century. The area was first known as "Hutchinson's Landing" after Colonel James Hutchins, who purchased land here in 1798. By 1836, what is now South Houston had become a part of the Republic of Texas. In 1845, following the Mexican-American War, Mexico ceded most of Texas to United States authorities under the Treaty of Guadalupe Hidalgo. The area became part of Houston on October 29,1845. AsHouston grew and developed its economy, it increasingly attracted Anglo-Americans and Mexicans together. Spanish speakers were also displaced in this period by waves of English colonists from neighboring Missouri and Kentucky. During Reconstruction in America following World War I (1914-1918), many black Americans moved into South Houston from north central Texas to work in local businesses or serve in the military during the post-apartheid era when African Americans were not counted as citizens or allowed to vote. Street names such as "Alameda" (now Midtown) and "Washington" (now West Side) reflect this history. Most white residents continued to reside in neighborhoods such as Midtown or Westside until after that city's incorporation into Harris County in 1965 created new boundaries forHouston Heights and Montrose areas south of Rice Road and east of Dairy Ashford Boulevard which are still largely white today despite steady population growth throughout much ofHouston over these years).
