The area that now makes up SouthHouston was first settled by Texans who had come from Louisiana in 1836. In 1849, Scots-Irish immigrants arrived and built a home called "Laughing Waters" about 3 miles (5 km) east of present day SouthHouston on a bend in Buffalo Bayou. They named their new settlement Laughing Waters after an old Irish Legend which says that if you cross Buffalo Bayou while it's flowing full of water (a sign that it will flood in future), you can tell immediately when God is angry because laughter appears on both sides of the bayou. In 1861, two brothers named George Stephenson bought 1/4 acre (0.20 km2) of land next to Laughing Waters for $10USD per acre from James Hoggarty Sr., one of Houston's early settlers. Stephenson later became mayor of Houston and served as its first administrator under Sam Houston
