South Houston is a city in Harris County, Texas, United States. The population was 12,651 at the 2010 census. It is located on the east side of Houston and shares borders with Sugar Land to the north and west; MidtownHouston to the south; and Pasadena to the east. South Houston is within walking distance of both North Shore Drive and Rice University. The site that now makes up South Houston was annexed byHouston in 1836 as part of what became known as the annexation controversy between Sam Houston's Republic (north) and Antonio Lopez de Santa Anna's Mexican Empire (south). In 1839, Stephen F. Austin purchased about 450 acres (1 km²) from Moses Brown for $2,000 after Brownsville had been destroyed by an Indian raid. The tract included what would become downtown South Houston. On July 20, 1840, Austin staged a drive through town to commemorate independence Day when he discovered that residents were still celebrating Mexico's victory over Spain in 1814 without obeying US Independence Act proclamation ordering them to desist from such celebrations. As a result of this defiance, Austin levied a fine of $200 against each resident/worker who did not leave town on hearing news of his arrival. In 1861-1862 during Confederate Captivity Fort Bend County was established due to fears that northern Texans would take over any southern counties which surrendered (due largely to Stephens' Rebellion). This led to increased development around Barker Road including more warehouses and cotton Gin stores along with brickyards and other factories developing near present day Gulf Freeway & Richmond Highway intersection creating what are today referred to as "the heart of downtown." During Reconstruction following the Civil War white flight began in order for African Americans fleeing Jim Crow America seeking opportunity in newly Freed Econoland found their way intoHouston via streetcar lines operated by Southern Railroad Company president George Biddle slaveholders wanted control over these transportation arteries linking new urban areas with rural whites providing jobs necessary for modernization such as tracks etc... local black officials successfully lobbied state leaders for Welcome Homes Program which provided lowinterest loans unavailable through traditional lending institutions so African Americans could purchase homes near schools or businesses opening up opportunities for upward mobility starting out as sharecroppers ending up owning homes closer than ever before despite high levels of poverty throughout much of south Harris County... this program eventually morphed into Black Homeowners League
The first permanent settler in what is now South Houston was Frenchman Antoine Le Moyne, who arrived in 1736. He built the first house on the present site of South Houston in what is now Hermann Park. The early settlers were all Frenchmen, and they quickly learned to cultivate maize, beans, and other crops. In 1836, Texas became an independent United States of America and Houston was named the capital of this new country. The pioneer farmers here continued to grow crops until well into the 20th century. In addition to their farming activities, some of these early Texans also established businesses such as a sawmill and a grist mill. Houston grew rapidly during the 19th century because it became an important commercial center for both Texas and Mexico. It was also home to many famous people including Sam Houston and James Kossuth. The city’s growth spurt came to an end after World War II whensectional economic development within Mexican AmericanHouston led to heavy crime rates in the city limits
